Hey, MRAs: If you don’t want people to associate you with hatred, don’t associate yourself with hate groups

MRAs: digging their own hole.

Here’s a bit of advice for Men’s Rights redditors and MRAs in general: if you don’t want people to associate the Men’s Rights movement with hatred, you should probably not associate yourselves with hate groups.

Yesterday, a fellow called heiligenschein posted a link in the Men’s Rights subreddit to a relatively new subreddit called simply SPLC, a subreddit set up by enemies of the Southern Poverty Law Center and devoted to, as heiligenschein put it, “compiling the numerous criticisms of the [SPLC].” As he explained in a comment:

That’s a somewhat odd criticism for heiligenschein, one of the moderators of the SPLC subreddit, to make. If you look at the front page of this subreddit, you’ll discover that he and his pals are already doing a fine job of associating themselves with “neo nazi nutters” all by themselves.

If you scroll through the links, you’ll notice that Heiligenschein has posted links to several different articles from VDare.com, which the SPLC describes as an “anti-immigration hate website” which “regularly publishes articles by prominent white nationalists, race scientists and anti-Semites.” Note to MRAs: if you’re disinclined to take the word of the SPLC on anything, all you need to do to get a sense of VDare’s genteel racism is to do a search on the site for, well, the word “racism,” or “immigrant.” Or you can read VDare founder Peter Brimelow’s repulsive victim-blaming post on the “root causes” of the Sikh temple murders in Wisconsin.

Heiligenschein  also links to the virulently anti-immigrant American Patrol Report and a Confederacy-loving group called the Georgia Heritage Council; a quick glance at either group’s website will reveal what sort of organizations these are. He also links to a pretty hateful site called A Voice for Men, which some of you may have heard of already.

But the connection to the racist far-right goes beyond a couple of links. The five other moderators of the r/splc subreddit – mayonesa, dvance, Octuple, salsaverde, warkin – are also the moderators of reddit’s race-obsessed “new right” subreddit. Some of the submissions in that subreddit at the moment:

18% of marriages by Chinese and Japanese Americans are to Jews. Thoughts?

The poison of multiculturalism

USA Olympic athlete waves Mex flag: propaganda-bearing parasite prole being used as an infectious agent by the master parasite class?

The not-so-fab five also moderate a smaller subreddit called “alternative right,” a dog-whistle term amongst the far right for (pseudo) intellectual racism and so-called “human biological diversity.” Some of the submissions there, all of them submitted by moderator Mayonesa:

Emo neckbeards having hategasm over pro-white flyer

“I believe Europe to be the ‘white man’s country’. If they don’t want non-whites among them, I think it’s fair.”

Diversity perversity: Behind multicultural push is effort to degrade American culture

The West has been seriously damaged by Communist successes at memetic subversion.

The five run at least two more subreddits devoted to this kind of crap.

Just so you know, MRAs, these are the sort of people you end up hanging out with once you join the SPLC anti-fan club.

Naturally, the handful of comments I found in the r/mensrights discussion on the subject pointing out that the r/splc moderators were a bunch of race-obsessed far-right extremists — see here, here, and here —  all got downvotes from the regulars there.

You’re digging your own hole here, MRAs.

@Jumbofisch, I thought the Toaster said he was on the spectrum, and that’s why talking to gurlz is hard, and why it would be so much better when everyone’s been shucked out of their bodies like so many corn cobs and loaded into robots that are better, faster, stronger, harder, deeper and longer.

Dodd-Frank might not be perfect, but it goes a long way to protecting both the financial industry and consumers. I stand by what I said: it cost him a lot politically to get it passed, and he did the best he could with an obstructionist congress and political opposition that didn’t negotiate in good faith (they watered down the bill and then refused to vote for it anyway…this was before the Obama administration realized that there was no possible way to “reach across the isle” because the GOP was serious when they said their number one priority was defeating Obama).

Oh, fuck you. You’re beneath contempt.

My little brother is in Special Ed. He’s a brilliant kid, amazingly talented and creative, better at math when he was 10 than I am at 26. But he has a learning disorder, and he’s on the spectrum, so he needs extra help with classes that require reading and writing (he couldn’t read until he was nine, and he was probably in high school before writing a paragraph didn’t take him days of sweat and tears). Do you have any idea how much effort it takes to keep him from thinking of himself as stupid, worthless, or that he’ll never accomplish anything? I asked him a few months ago if he was planning to take the SAT. “What’s the point?” he snapped. “I’m just a retard.” God, the look on his face…I don’t think I’ll ever forget the self-loathing. It broke my heart.

You aren’t clever or brave. Nothing could be more cowerdly or just fucking pedestrian as mocking people in special ed.

(We do have a little deal going, my brother and I. A while ago, I asked him, for probably the 15th time, to please stop calling himself retarded. He looked at me for a second, then said, “Okay, I’ll stop saying that I’m retarded if you stop saying that you’re fat.” It kind of startled me, but I realized that I spent a lot of time vocalizing how much I hate my body, and it bothered him. [Aside: he was the first person to realize I had an eating disorder, years ago. He’s so sensitive and loving; I adore that kid.] So it’s been a little less than a year, and we both work to keep our end of the deal.)

Yeah. That’s what I don’t get–so much of Obama’s foreign policy (and, okay, his domestic policy, sadly) is just a continuation of the Bush years. And yet people I talk to who think Bush was just the BEST PRESIDENT EVER (no, I don’t understand it) think Obama is an anti-American anti-Christ.

I’ve been really disappointed with Obama, but unfortunately, it’s him or Romney, so I’m gonna work my ass off to do whatever I can to get him re-elected. 2012 might be something of a letdown, but I’d rather not go back to 1950 all the same. And it drives me nuts to see people accusing Obama of being or doing things that are just so obviously false–this is the age of google! We shouldn’t be mired in all these lies when two seconds on the computer will show you the truth of all the accusations! Criticize the president for what he’s actually done (or not done). There’s plenty there; no need to make anything up.

They can’t even get their history right. Snorri Thorfinnsson was born in Vinland sometime between 1004 and 1013.

And of course Vdare trips off the tongue so much more easily than Sthorfinnsson. They’d splutter trying to say it. And helps them think there’s something ‘daring’ about being a racist.

Shaenon, I cracked up reading the Book of Learnin’!

Myoo: yeah, I figured that, but wasn’t sure I should type in “Indian” because then I’d get a ton of articles complaining about people from India coming over here on HB-1 visas and stealing computer programmer jobs from White American Males. But I don’t think they talk too much about Native Americans over at Vdare. It would be too… ironic?

I said it before, and I’ll say it again: Autism(in all of it’s forms) is NOT the same thing as retardation!

It infuriates me that autistic youth(& children)get thrown in special ed classes which are designed for kids actually are retarded. Some of those children may need a different kind of classroom environment but they shouldn’t be lumped in with kids who have completely unrelated disabilities.

Do you have any idea how much effort it takes to keep him from thinking of himself as stupid, worthless, or that he’ll never accomplish anything? I asked him a few months ago if he was planning to take the SAT. “What’s the point?” he snapped. “I’m just a retard.”

As a matter of fact I do. You need to tell him that he’s too smart to be thrown in special ed and that by studying hard on his own,and taking the SAT and even retaking it until he gets a decent score is the way for him to get ahead and rise above the SPED stigma. It’s called encouragement. And it really helps. You’ve gotta PUSH that kid! That’s the only way he’ll ever be convinced that he’s capable of accomplishment and that someone believe in him.

As for Buttman, only someone with a IQ < 100 would talk the way he does. Populist conservatives who still babble about commies some 20 years after the cold war ended are extremely stupid people.

Oh, forgot to say that they also use the term “Native-born Americans” a lot to differentiate those who were born here from those awful immigrants. I’ll bet if pressed a Vdarer would start screeching about how “anyone who’s born here is a Native American” and then you ask him “well what about babies born to undocumented immigrants — don’t they get to be native too?” and see their heads explode as they try to explain why a white kid born in the US of parents who were settlers from England way before things like documents were necessary was somehow immediately native while a kid born to a Mexican couple who also didn’t have any more paperwork than the Dares was somehow less native.

Right. And why exactly is this a reason to shit all over those other kids? Do you think it’s fair to compare children with disabilities to willfully ignorant hatemongers?

No I don’t. However, the way you really get to people like that is to presume that their beliefs are the result of a severe lack of intelligence rather than willful ignorance. Calling people “hatemongers” doesn’t pack any punch with guys like Buttman. I’ll bet he uses that handle cuz he’s a closet case who’s too afraid to come out.

Shorter Nommie: MY disability is only one of my many individual characteristics and does not detract from my humanity. YOUR disability renders you barely human at all, and means I can ridicule you with no repercussions whatsoever! We might struggle with some of the same things, but at least I’m not like YOU.

Internalized ableism, ain’t it grand?

And dude, nothing “packs a punch” with Buttman. Because, again, willful ignorance. Emphasis on “willful”. So your bigoted digs are not only asinine, but ineffective.
