antifeminism I'm totally being sarcastic it's science! misandry misogyny MRA reddit the c-word whores woman's suffrage

Science proves the Men’s Rights subreddit to be totally not (completely) misogynistic

So apparently I’m way off base with this “misogyny” thing. For example, I have been under the impression that I have been finding misogynistic stuff in the Men’s Rights subreddit, like, all the time. With upvotes, and everything. But evidently I’m wrong.

Because now ignatiusloyola, one of the subreddit mods, has done a very scientific study that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that, well, whatever misogyny is there is officially not a big damn deal.

Ig explains his protocol:

I did a quick scan of the first 400 comments on the list (100/page, 4 pages in). I scanned for words like “cunt” and “whore”, and read the context of these. I looked for the words “woman” and “women”, and read the context of these. I looked for “suffrage” and “vote” also.

I found two comments that used the word “cunt”, one of them was used to describe men, the other to describe a specific woman. The only instances of “whore” were “attention whore”.

There were two comments involving the word “woman” that generalized women with negative stereotypes.

“Suffrage” and “vote” instances did not involve any context that suggested that women did not deserve the right to vote.

How a person defines “hatred of women”, either loosely (suggestive from context, rather than explicit) or strictly (explicit statements), it is pretty clear that out of 400 comments, very few are misogynistic.

Does misogyny exist? Yes. But it does not seem to be a significant contribution to r/MensRights. At best, people are seeing a few comments and focusing on their existence while ignoring the rest.

It’s a lot like that time Michael Richards did that standup routine, and everyone focused on that one word he said, totally ignoring all the other words he used that were totally not racist slurs. I mean, yeah, he said that word a bunch of times, but it still made up a very small percentage of all the words he used that evening.

So that’s that, then. Misogyny, officially not a problem!

Or that would have been that, had Ig not actually posted about his experiment to the subreddit he had just proved was, like, totally non-misogynistic:

Because it turned out that a couple of the fellas had an issue with Ig’s methodology. In particular, that stuff about female suffrage. Because, apparently, you can totally be against women having the right to vote and still not be a misogynist. As zyk0s put it (garnering upvotes in the process):

[T]here’s the matter of female suffrage. I really don’t see how suggesting women should not have been granted the right to vote is misogyny. It might be motivated by it, but not necessarily so, and treating it as such is akin to criminalizing holocaust denial: it’s censorship, pure and simple, and if [1] /r/MR wants to keep calling itself an open space where ideas are not silenced, that attitude has to change.

Our friend Demonspawn went even further(and got a few upvotes himself):

Suggesting that the government works better without the women’s vote is not misogyny. It’s an analysis of the facts and the consequences of allowing women’s suffrage.

Suggesting that women retain the right to vote without the corresponding responsibilities that men face is misandry.

So there you have it. The Men’s Rights subreddit doesn’t have a misogyny problem; if anything, it’s a hotbed of misandry.

Here’s a perfect example of why Manboobz is such a great site: we started out debunking some typically idiotic, not-at-all interesting MRA crap, and now here we are arguing about typefaces/fonts!

Personally, I agree that Times New Roman is a good standard for professional stuff like CVs. I second the notion that serif fonts are generally easier on the eyes; I like Garamond for my personal stuff. Love the idea of a universal font that accommodates diacritical markings for non-Indo-European languages that use the Latin alphabet (like Vietnamese, for example).

Can everyone be sure to go over there and “dislike” this video? Because right now there are more likes than dislikes, and that will cause them to do more of this sort of thing.

They’re also marking comments that disagree with their world view as Spam, so everyone feel free to sound off. The more logical the comment, it seems, the more negative votes they get.

It doesn’t get any better than this. Which troll was saying that youtube comments are an accurate view of society again? when MRAs call for their hoards to go downvote. LOL @ the idea that feminists will base their decisions on whether to discuss things based on youtube votes. That’s some real logic this dude has going there.

Also funny is how the first comment complains that Anita needs to discuss how playing muscular men affects the boys playing them, then the third comment calls David fat.

Even funnier is Glorius Bastard’s ” Oh, and go make me a sandwhich” poor dear can’t even spell his insults correctly.

You don’t get dumber than the-spearhead 😛 Meller makes an appearance too.

I just realized I missed out on Joe in the last thread. That makes me sad, he’s my favourite troll. He’s like playing counter-troll on easy.

NWO used to be my favorite, but he’s been so half-assed lately, and none of the new crop are as brilliant as he used to be.

Awww. No fair geeking out over fonts while my power was out guys!

I have strong feelings on fonts. I read somewhere that we read sans serif fonts faster than serif fonts, but we remember information from serif fonts better. No idea if that’s backed up by research but it’s an interesting idea. I strongly prefer the serif fonts because I find them easier to read. A lot of publications use serifs for body copy and sans serif for headlines, because without the serifs they take up less space.

Every time I get a new version of MS Word I force the defaults back to Times New Roman 12 point. The points, by the way, measure how much space a capital M will take in an inch of type. There are 72 points per inch. A 12 point font means the capital M in that font is 12 points wide.

Comic Sans is a bit of an embarrassment IMNSHO unless it’s being used ironically. I used to caution my students that even with the hundreds of font variations you can get, in pro work you’re going to use maybe 5 different fonts total, and they’ll all be pretty boring, because readability is way more important than using the Harry Potter font.

Also does knowing the difference between points and picas and how to correctly pronounce “leading” when talking typography mean I have redeeming value as a woman? Cause I think it should count.

Also also “pica” is a fun word to say.

(I have consumed a lot of sugar this evening.)

Hey guys, check it out: Steelpole has made a friend!

Either that or he’s made a new sock for his even-lazier, even-worse-writer, even-more-bigoted side. It’s another site with the default WordPress theme (Twenty Eleven) and unaltered tagline and About page.

And there’s fiction. About the future. Srsly, have a look.

(He claims he was banned from MBZ, but he must have been socking; I don’t see anything by anyone with that handle.)

I must admit I do get mildly annoyed every time Papyrus is used, especially if it’s used to advertise something natural or “green”

then again I’ve used custom goth fonts and shit like that which I’m sure is not looked highly upon by graphic designers 😛

Dammit, I missed his original appearance.

I just have a weakness for shitty WordPress blogs created in five seconds because someone had one sentence he felt the need to broadcast to the universe.

For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume an election with only two candidates: A and B. A woman votes for candidate A. Since men are a diverse group, given even a midly-decently-sized male voting population, there will almost assuredly have been a man who had voted for candidate B. In our current voting methodology, there is no distinction in a woman’s vote vs. a man’s – therefore, her vote for candidate A effectively nullifies his vote for candidate B, which makes her, a female, equal to him, a male, and that is not right.

This was the argument presented throughout the ages.
That, and the man will just get an “extra” vote when the woman votes his way. So we just can’t win.

But consider this. Why is the man the default here? So let women vote and forget the men in family, right? Also not all women are married.

(When my father died, I registered to vote, and I do vote, but feel MASSIVE amounts of guilt every time.)

I’m assuming you’re female based on this statement. You are a human being, no better or no worse than a male human being. Men are not better or more worthy, no matter how much the misogynist ones scream and yell that they are. Some men do great things, some men do horrifying things. As do women. You have every right as a human being to have a say in how your government is run and there is no reason to feel any guilt for this. I’m sorry you were raised to believe otherwise 🙁

@Rahu

Damn homie, that’s fucked up, and you have my sympathies. You don’t have to feel guilty about exercising your rights though, just as long as you recognize it’s fucked up to deny anyone else their own (which you seem to do).

*From your story I’m inferring that you’re a guy, but it’s obviously equally applicable if you’re a woman.

@indifferentsky

I don’t think Rahu is defending the mindset, just presenting it to us as someone who had to grow up with that shit.

@Shadow

haha yeah that’s odd, I assumed zi is female because zi feels guilty for voting while being raised to believe only men should thus going against zir’s father’s wishes?

I dunno, regardless zi has no reason to feel guilty to exercise that right.

@Shadow

I can see where your read is coming from though, a guy raised with that mindset could feel guilty because essentially he was raised to believe his vote should count for more and now realizing that that is wrong he could feel guilty about it. I think that’s what you meant right?

Shadow

@Quackers

Yep. Like I said, that makes more sense. My initial read was that zie was a guy who felt guilty about voting because in their household voting was tied up with denying women their right to vote, but Rahu feeling guilty because they’re a woman who was raised to believe she shouldn’t vote makes more sense. I think I just defaulted to dude because zie said that they were moving away from the MRM.

I seriously cannot believe in 2012 questioning the right for women to vote is still a thing. That is some depressing shit right there and in all honesty makes me see the point of some radfems (the points on how deep the belief that women are subhuman goes anyway)

I said it before and I’ll say it again, the best way for MRAs to make feminism disappear forever it to stop fucking questioning and denying us the same rights and voices that men have. It is WRONG. It will always BE wrong. Just fucking accept it already.
