antifeminism I'm totally being sarcastic it's science! misandry misogyny MRA reddit the c-word whores woman's suffrage

Science proves the Men’s Rights subreddit to be totally not (completely) misogynistic

So apparently I’m way off base with this “misogyny” thing. For example, I have been under the impression that I have been finding misogynistic stuff in the Men’s Rights subreddit, like, all the time. With upvotes, and everything. But evidently I’m wrong.

Because now ignatiusloyola, one of the subreddit mods, has done a very scientific study that proves beyond a reasonable doubt that, well, whatever misogyny is there is officially not a big damn deal.

Ig explains his protocol:

I did a quick scan of the first 400 comments on the list (100/page, 4 pages in). I scanned for words like “cunt” and “whore”, and read the context of these. I looked for the words “woman” and “women”, and read the context of these. I looked for “suffrage” and “vote” also.

I found two comments that used the word “cunt”, one of them was used to describe men, the other to describe a specific woman. The only instances of “whore” were “attention whore”.

There were two comments involving the word “woman” that generalized women with negative stereotypes.

“Suffrage” and “vote” instances did not involve any context that suggested that women did not deserve the right to vote.

How a person defines “hatred of women”, either loosely (suggestive from context, rather than explicit) or strictly (explicit statements), it is pretty clear that out of 400 comments, very few are misogynistic.

Does misogyny exist? Yes. But it does not seem to be a significant contribution to r/MensRights. At best, people are seeing a few comments and focusing on their existence while ignoring the rest.

It’s a lot like that time Michael Richards did that standup routine, and everyone focused on that one word he said, totally ignoring all the other words he used that were totally not racist slurs. I mean, yeah, he said that word a bunch of times, but it still made up a very small percentage of all the words he used that evening.

So that’s that, then. Misogyny, officially not a problem!

Or that would have been that, had Ig not actually posted about his experiment to the subreddit he had just proved was, like, totally non-misogynistic:

Because it turned out that a couple of the fellas had an issue with Ig’s methodology. In particular, that stuff about female suffrage. Because, apparently, you can totally be against women having the right to vote and still not be a misogynist. As zyk0s put it (garnering upvotes in the process):

[T]here’s the matter of female suffrage. I really don’t see how suggesting women should not have been granted the right to vote is misogyny. It might be motivated by it, but not necessarily so, and treating it as such is akin to criminalizing holocaust denial: it’s censorship, pure and simple, and if [1] /r/MR wants to keep calling itself an open space where ideas are not silenced, that attitude has to change.

Our friend Demonspawn went even further(and got a few upvotes himself):

Suggesting that the government works better without the women’s vote is not misogyny. It’s an analysis of the facts and the consequences of allowing women’s suffrage.

Suggesting that women retain the right to vote without the corresponding responsibilities that men face is misandry.

So there you have it. The Men’s Rights subreddit doesn’t have a misogyny problem; if anything, it’s a hotbed of misandry.

I love the cartoon David chose to illustrate this post, because it never fails to amaze me how little misogyny changes over time. The anti-suffrage insults are exactly the same as modern anti-feminist insults: “You just hate men, and anyway you’re ugly!”

I mean, why else would a woman want the right to vote, if not a combination of man-hating and ugliness?

@Ami

Also, the feminists have all the lightsabres. And the adorable plushie penguins.

Also, I’m sure that’s not how Star Wars worked either. I haven’t watch it in a while (videotapes lack subtitles, 🙁 ) but I thought that a lot of other toppling work had been done before our heroes finished the job?

Ami – That… explains a lot, actually.

It also reflects how little real-life hardship the average MRA is facing. In my experience with various social movements, it’s the comfy privileged people who say “the most important thing is bringing about a total worldwide revolution” and the people with real problems who say “yeah, a revolution would be nice, but in the meantime… can anyone help find my friend somewhere to sleep tonight?”

Their total lack of concern for doing anything unglamorous and immediate, for feeding or housing men or getting men healthcare or legal support, tells me just how not-suffering they are.

Did ya ever think that maybe, just maybe, a majority modern women lack any redeeming qualities.

No, but it looks like lots of guys on the Men’s Rights Reddit have. Why don’t you go hang out with them?

I mean, come on, you know you’re being silly here. I bring joy to thousands by drawing hilarious cartoons and have also developed a perfect baked eggplant recipe. That’s two redeeming qualities right there.

If you can name a redeeming quality you have, I will share my recipe.

…I like eggplant and my biggest redeeming quality is I’ve save, like, dozens of human lives. Can I have your recipe?

🙂

*helped save. EMS is a big team and anyone claiming they “saved a life” on their own is either an egotist, or they’re talking about an off-the-job situation.

(I did save one guy all on my own because I was off-duty and he had a seizure in a pool and I swam in and pulled him out. That was a freak coincidence though.)

NWO- If a man gets aroused because he is sexually attracted to my car, he does not have a free license to do whatever he wants to my vehicle. I do not see how my body is any different than any other thing that I use and own. My body is my property. You don’t get to have it just because you want it.

Take some fucking responsibility for your actions. Just because a man gets a boner doesn’t mean he has to immediately have sex with whatever he thinks caused the boner or he will die. I have immeasurably higher respect for men and their abilities to control their own behavior. It is only sad fucking worthless creeps like you who try to justify rape and assault of others just because you feel entitled not to control yourselves.

Repeat after me: you are not mindcontrolled by your boner

Just because a man gets a boner doesn’t mean he has to immediately have sex with whatever he thinks caused the boner or he will die.

Especially since it’s hard to have sex with a breeze or warm sun.

That sucks.

but I thought that a lot of other toppling work had been done before our heroes finished the job?

So that’s how Luke and Leia and Lando could afford to take time off to go spring Han before they toppled the Empire! I always wondered why they did it in that order*. I mean, Han will still be there when the Death Star blows up, and the Alliance is on kind of a tight schedule.

*I mean, it’s not like that’s the total reverse of How You Drama or anything, and it’s not like Harrison Ford had a contract.

And even if YOU PERSONALLY FEEL there are many reasons to hate women, it still does not make it right. 3 billion people worldwide should not be expected to carry the burden of your ex wife’s/girlfriend’s/mother’s/coworker’s misdeeds. Grow up already.

Hi – this is my first time posting.

My father was an MRA, so I was raised in that since birth. I have been doing a LOT of reading (I’ve actually been lurking here for quite a while now), and am seeing more and more of the problems with the MRM and am becoming a feminist.

However, fwiw, I can at least explain the “logic” in the MRA stance that women should not be allowed to vote (my mother, for example, was forbidden to register to vote).

For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume an election with only two candidates: A and B. A woman votes for candidate A. Since men are a diverse group, given even a midly-decently-sized male voting population, there will almost assuredly have been a man who had voted for candidate B. In our current voting methodology, there is no distinction in a woman’s vote vs. a man’s – therefore, her vote for candidate A effectively nullifies his vote for candidate B, which makes her, a female, equal to him, a male, and that is not right.

(When my father died, I registered to vote, and I do vote, but feel MASSIVE amounts of guilt every time.)

Because I’m a curious sort, NWO, what do you consider redeeming qualities in a woman?

Someone who wants to fuck NWO.

But none of them do, so they must be terrible.

I usually use Times New Roman, because it’s professional and appropriate for a lot of situations, and because I don’t notice it the same way I notice other fonts.

My mother, on the other hand, refuses to read some books on the Kindle because the font is inappropriate for the story and it throws her out of the book.

I am so fucking sick off this MRA trope that men do special extra shit in order to vote. No they don’t. I looked up voting rights in the US and nowhere does it say that men can’t vote if they don’t sign up for selective service. Also since there hasn’t been a draft since vietnam and the military is mainly voluntary men should still get the right to vote and women never do? so men may or may not get drafted but either way they get to vote but women don’t even though its men keeping them out of combat in the first place. How is any of this fair and NOT oppressive to women? Also what about all the men who can’t fight or join the military? The physically disabled? Men with mental health issues? Men who are not physically strong enough? Do they still get to vote?

Do MRAs even think this through? This blatant lie that men are so downtrodden with tons more obligations than women needs to stop, cuz these keyboard warriors do nothing but sit on their computers all day, they don’t fight in wars or work in mines, so maybe they shouldn’t have the right to vote either.

Also if the whole problem with women voting is because they vote for socialist government, by MRA logic no man should be allowed in politics since it was MEN who invented the concept of socialism and communism in the first place. Also the idea that no men vote liberal or for socialist policies is stupid as hell. Its actually pretty close an equal split between men who vote liberal and conservative. but really, I love the whole ‘you don’t vote how I want so you shouldn’t vote at all’ thing. Real democratic there.

This is why the MRM gets critisized as misogynist. Women’s rights are always questioned or argued against. No feminist has ever seriously said men should’t vote. Its just a given that men have all the rights because they are men, and women’s rights are looked at with suspision. Where are the scholarly papers questioning mens rights and their effects on government? Fuck this shit, this is exactly why feminists say we live in a misogynist culture.

The only commenter on this site who might give Steele a run for his bits in the bad writing department is Joe, and that’s only because of his Caps Lock of Tage Wharblgarbl meltdown on the last thread.

I want to see Joe come back and take Ami seriously, making him start a frothing “right-libertarian is the only true way” meltdown by sticking to my anarcho-communist/transhumanist views and actually defending them with some degree of self-esteem was one of the most satisfying things I’ve done since beating the tutorial of Dark Souls.

If we’re going to get all fonty around here, my favorite font for professionalism is Arial. It’s clear to read, doesn’t have any weird flourishes, and is a good all-purpose font.

My favorite fonts to type with for other communication are Monotype Corsiva and Tempus Sans. Both are very unique.

I love monotype corsiva, but professionally I’ve been taught to use Arial, and it kind of stuck.
