In yet another discussion of Arthur Goldwag’s latest post on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch blog (looking at MRAs bad-mouthing the men who lost their lives protecting their girlfriends in the Aurora shootings), longtime Men’s Rights Redditor Liverotto offers this intriguing take on what he sees as Goldwag’s motivations for criticizing the Men’s Rights movement:
Yeah, a dude actually wrote that, and a couple of people actually upvoted it.
I’m trying to understand the logic: Goldwag is growing older and more homosexual (do men usually become gay as they age?). But gay men age badly, which makes them mad at their “suitors.” So therefore Goldwag has come to hate the (mostly straight) men of the Men’s Rights movement?
Another highlight of the discussion: The r/mensrights regular who thinks I’m Paul Elam. No, really.
*ads my spelling is crap tonight
Liverotto has thankfully been downvoted to -6. But then he later receives +1 for defending himself against charges that his rant is imcomprehensible so…
Oh Madogoddess almighty, as a massive MLP Fan, this gets old. MLP did end up with some pretty fucking racist shit; that the gal who wrote that article was wrong on how it’d be done (When she only had the pilot to go on) doesn’t mean she was wrong that it was going to be done. Regarding the rest, that she was concerned after having seen the pilot, but wrong, does not change that the concerns were valid. IT’s not like entertainment for kids (or adults, or people in general) has a habit of *not* fucking those things up.
OMG are we nerding out about Neal Stephenson? 😀
I feel like Ellen Page might be getting too old for YT? She’s supposed to be 15. Ellen’s like 25 now. Then again, with Hollywood casting she’d probably be fine.
Who am I kidding, I would love the movie, no matter how badly casted/made. Cast Ellen Degeneres as YT, I’ll see it in theaters 10 times a week!
Anathem was not that difficult for me to get through. My biggest problem was occasionally having to put it down in order to mull something over. And, of course, the last page. I was impressed with how conclusive the conclusion was. 😉
OTOH, I never was able to get through much of Lord of the Rings. I guess I like philosophy better than linguistics, huh?
So heterosexual MRAs all age well, huh? They get the weathered look that adds value. LOL!
BTW, Ellen Degeneres, another sexy woman over 40.
Every guy wanted to play Chun-Li. It’s called autogynephilia.
Firstly, ‘every guy’? Considering the vast majority of SFII players were guys, who the hell was playing all the other characters? Unless you meant ‘Every guy wanted to play Chun-Li as well as various other characters’, in which case, what’s your fucking point?
Secondly, it’s very telling that you imply that Chun-Li was nothing more than a female skin and completely ignore the fact that she was, y’know, a specific character with completely different moves to all the others. (In fact she was almost unique in that she and Zangief were the only characters without a fireball/human cannonball-type move, meaning that you had no other options than to move in and go toe-to-toe.) So perhaps people chose to play her because of her speed/power/range balance and her moveset, just like they’d choose to play any other fucking character.
So, wait, by the logic being used in regards to guys playing Chun-Li, what about women who play male characters? And what does it mean when you play an entire game as Lara Croft, while staring at her ass?
I already know the answer is going to be stupid, I’m just curious to see which particular variety of stupid dudebro comes up with.
And what does it mean when you play an entire game as Lara Croft, while staring at her ass?
You can’t complete the game because you’re not looking at what you’re doing and die?

some dude: It seems to be a failure of data sampling or synecdoche for you or Arthur to pick out specific comments or even specific bloggers and then project across an entire movement. Criticize the comment, or the post, or the blogger yes, that’s reasonable, but projecting to the entire movement unfair unless you have done a real survey.
To expand on my last comment, my guess is that in any social movement there is a bell curve of beliefs.
You seem to seek out outliers and isolated views from the long tail curve and then parade them as if they were the mean.
Ok… show us the blogger out there who are “moderate”. Give us the the “vast middle” of the bell curve.
And, if you are bored, read someone else.
Some dude: One, not related to feminist/mensrights, is, just as a citizen who grew up in the 60s and 70s, my notion of journalism is from Watergate, Lou Grant, and NPR, and I am honestly confused with how “advocacy journalism” sits within the space of “journalism”. And I am not even saying you are an advocacy journalist.
It sits just fine. You might want to read a text on the subject. I suggest “Interpretive Reporting, 8th Edition” (the original author died before the 9th came out, though technically the 8th ought to have been the 9th, but there was a title change).
What you are calling advocacy journalism isn’t new.
Two, certainly journalists are allowed to point out when people say horrible or horribly funny things, but when that becomes their oeuvre, it gets old and akin to beating a dead horse. Especially if this, as seen by others, is by cherry picking.
Oh, for fucks sake. Really? This is the argument you are making, “Especially if some people think you might be cherry picking,”? That’s swell. Doesn’t matter that Dave isn’t cherry picking, nope. Some people think so, and so it’s time to pack it in.
As to the “tiresome” claim, that’s weak sauce too. It’s not as if Rush Limbaugh isn’t doing the same schtick he’s been selling for more than 20 years.
Dave’s got a thriving blog, more than five million page views in something on the order of 2 years, even rounding up to about 3 years that’s roughly 5,000 a day. Given that one presumes it didn’t start out at that number, it’s reasonable to assume it’s more than that, in actual fact.
Not bad for something so worn out that it’s “akin to beating a dead horse.”
Never mind that the horse isn’t dead. It’s a group of bitter, angry, hateful, and loudmouthed people who are directing that hate at women.
I don’t expect Dave to go on forever. I don’t even expect him to go on until I die. But that you think he ought to stop fighting the shitbirds and skid-marks which are the Manosphere implies you don’t really think them all that big a deal.
That Dave’s work here is done. That the SPLC is over-reacting. That sounds like you think they don’t deserve scorn.
I, and a lot of the commenters here, disagree. Feel free to join Varpole in writing your own blog denouncing him/us, but don’t expect us to think your argument is in good faith.
Reynardine: Just as a note from someone who came from vintners on both sides: milk, properly aged, becomes cheese, and wine, improperly aged, becomes vinegar. So watch your similes and metaphors.
I’ve very carefully aged wine to make it vinegar. I don’t think the metaphor suffers for the reason you think it does. Many vinegars are quite pleasant.
I thought I used to choose Chun Li because she was fast and she could do that jumping off the edge of the screen thing, which combined with her head stomp move was pretty deadly, but I guess I was wrong.
lowquacks: On that note: does anyone here know how terminal-length hairs work? If you cut one, does it start growing again? And how does the body sense this?
No, they don’t. A follicle grows until it stops. Then it rests for a while. That’s its “terminal length”. Then it falls out. Then it starts again.
When they stop starting again, one has thinning hair.
“My wine tastes like vinegar; God knows what my vinegar tastes like.” – some comic book from the 90s
Red wine vinegar with some olive oil, spices and pineapple juice (trust me on this one) makes for a really nice stake marinade.
I always include garlic when I’m marinating a stake.
I am half awake and prone to typos this morning….

This place is for fat and ugly men and women that don’t have a life or personality
Strangely enough, the ads I’m getting right now are for ‘LifeLock.’ Does this ad know something I don’t? 😕
As I said upthread, they are not necessarily autoandrophiles, because male characters are the default. There are female autoandrophiles, though, usually yaoi fangirls who fetishize gay men.
Same as Chun-Li; my choice of example was informed by my preference for giant thighs rather than giant breasts. And of the guys who say, “I don’t want to be staring at some dude’s ass all game,” a lot of them are the same guys who say, “I wish I were a woman so I could look at myself in the mirror.”
oh cool we’ve got another dumb bonghit baby pretending he’s an expert on psychology.
Do you know anything about straight people who fetishize the gay?
Which you magicked out of your ass?
I believe they’re called girlfags and guydykes.
I’m not getting why anyone would disparage vinegar. It can do everything. Marinate stake, flavor a salad, disinfect your home, get rid of mold and mildew, boost your immune system, absorb other odors out of the air, pickle cucumbers, the list goes on and on.
With vinegar and baking soda both at hand you could conquer the world, yo.
