Our dear old friend MarkyMark (not the actor/singer) is back with more of his unique perspective on contemporary popular culture, which has apparently gotten way too friendly to the ladies. Here’s Marky:
[H]ow blatantly MATRIARCHAL TV has gotten. I was watching the NASCAR race at Loudon, NH today … when the predictable commercials and TV show promos came on. There was one show being promoted that, as far as I could tell, had all FEMALE characters; they were all women! There were no main, male characters I could see in the promo. The show was called Political Animals, and it’s on the USA Network.
Here’s an official promo picture for Political Animals.
I think Marky may need to get new glasses.
But no matter; Marky has seen all he needs to have an opinion.
When I saw the promo for it during the commercial break for my race, I was like wow, why would I even want to watch that crap? They have some old crones starring it, one of whom is Sigourney Weaver. Even when she was younger and more attractive, I couldn’t stand her; she was a bitch back in the day, and she’s a bitch now. Only now that she’s an old crone, she’s even more, er, ‘charming’ than she was back when she starred in Working Girl, circa 1989.
Um, you do realize that in Working Girl she was playing a character? A character that wasn’t supposed to be charming?
Marky begins to reminisce about the good old days, before television was taken over by the Amazonian warriors of the Matriarchy.
Back in the day, USA Network had some unique shows on; they had stuff on that no one else had, which made them worth watching. One of my favorites was Silk Stalkings, which I think originally ran on CBS, but I can’t be sure; other than sporting events, I haven’t watched network TV like CBS in ages. Another favorite show of mine on USA Network was Pacific Blue, which was about bike cops in Santa Monica, California. …
Then, over the years, USA Network changed; they no longer had the unique fare that had set them apart back in the 1990s. …
After seeing the promos for the new shows this fall, I don’t know; I don’t know that I’m missing anything by not having a TV at all. I had a TV, but I gave it to Ma because I never USED the damn thing! The things that I really want to see are available online, such as the racing. If I want to watch QUALITY TV programs, then I can go to Hulu.com; that site has the old, classic TV shows that were, unlike today’s trash, actually worth watching. I watched a couple of seasons of Adam-12 & Emergency! on that site-good, uplifting programming that showed men being men. I think I might be better off getting a bike or scooter with my extra cash. Either that, or I could start taking trips to Central & South America to meet some nice, hot women down there.
Oh, dear.
In closing, TV, from the looks of it, has gone totally matriarchal. They don’t even make a pretense of catering to men anymore-none! Since there’s nothing for me to watch on there, why get a TV, let alone a cable or satellite hookup for the damn thing?! Seriously, why bother watching it? The races are increasingly available online; sites like Hulu & Netflix carry TV shows and movies. To see things that appeal to me, I don’t need a TV. No wonder why TV and the rest of the old media are dying! Until next time…
Watching Adam-12 on your computer while muttering bitterly under your breath about the evil that is Sigourney Weaver – MGTOW activism at its finest!
Well I would direct him to shows like MadMen but I think he would believe it is all about women since they appear on the screen sometimes.
The USA Network was his favorite tv station. That’s all I needed to know about him to know what he’s like.
Women characters are one of my hot button issues. I am so sick of women being marginalized in fictional roles practically everywhere (and in the few that they aren’t marginalized-being viciously attacked for existing).
The dude ranting here though is just misogynistic plain and simple, though. There’s nothing even to argue. He’s a waste of air and Central/South America doesn’t want him either.
…some unique shows on; they had stuff on that no one else had…
…which was about bike cops in Santa Monica…
Hahaha.. funny. Seriously though, how many cop shows were there “back in the day”? Like a million?
That’s not to say they were all the same, but wow.
“There was one show being promoted that, as far as I could tell, had all FEMALE characters; they were all women! There were no main, male characters I could see in the promo.”
Oh, wee lamb. That must have been terrible, not seeing your sex represented in your entertainment.
I love that Marky Mark and reality are so far apart.
“Pacific Blue?” LOL. I watch what could be considered some bad tv, but COME ON.
Oh, whew. For a minute I thought you were talking about the REAL Marky Mark, a.k.a. actor Mark Wahlberg. I don’t love the guy, but he’s been in some decent stuff (I don’t hold him responsible for The Happening) and I was like, gosh, I had no idea he was such a douchebag.
I knew that MRAs had some interesting ideas on what constitutes ‘misandry’ (not to mention interesting ideas as to what the word actually means *coughSteelpolecough*), but now women existing is somehow oppressing men?
Diddums.
This stuff is almost beyond parody. Didn’t MarkyMark take his blog down for a while because he was worried that a co-worker might find it and realise that he’d been stalking her?
Cops riding around Santa Monica on bicycles? Isn’t that, um, kind of like Baywatch? Only an MRA could consider the lack of busty babes in swimsuits a sign that the show was designed to be more dude friendly.
The idea that there should be no women on TV unless the man watching would like to fuck them is sadly familiar, but still ridiculous.
So 1990s USA Network is his golden age of television? I remember some extremely sexist programming from that time, T&A shows, exploitation films, action and violence.
I haven’t watched in years. Has it really changed?
Do you think he wants us to know that he watches sports?
MRAs! Kill your television! All you need is a bookshelf filled with Star Wars novels!
Translation: I hate that females characters aren’t as marginalized as they used to be.
Just because there are more shows with prominent female characters, it doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of male-centered shows to choose from:
The Big Bang Theory
Two and a Half Men
Family Guy
etc.
And why can’t Marky enjoy a show centered around a female character? Oh yeah, he’s prejudiced against women.
Sigourney Weaver–YOWZA!
I’ve seen the ads for this show–I probably won’t watch (we prefer sf or mysteries), but I’m thrilled to see she’s still getting roles in major projects.
And snickering at Poor MM’s hurt fee-fees.
Anyone else pissed at Viacom for pulling their shows (DAILY AND COLBERT!!!!!!!!!!) to to try to get 30% more out of DIRECTV for the same programming (and at the same time “slimming down” their web offerings)?
*DAMN YOU SUMNER REDSTONE**
Not for the first time, I am left awestruck by the depth and originality of your insight.
By these standards Baywatch is a misandric show.
Didn’t USA show a lot of Designing women reruns back in the day?
Even the Olympics are suffering a matriarchal takeover:

Enjoying your hategasm, Wetherby?
Anyway, it seems to me that Marky likes the Smurfette Principle:
Come again? (As it were)
I can’t help but think that guys like this are in denial about some aspect of their personality. I mean I know that it’s a cliche, and I know that armchair psychoanalysis is dangerous. But whenever I see an article by one of these guys, it always seems like they’re expressly going out of their way to affirm their own manhood in the eyes of others. As if telling everyone they like sports, racing, and cop shows is what makes them a man right?
I’m guessing our friend wasn’t a fan of the Alien franchise…
Also, please note that “is really nice and gosh darn it I just like him/her” is now the primary qualification for a career in acting. This is going to involve eliminating a whole lot of actors from TV, but oh well, wouldn’t want MarkyMark to have to watch someone who he thinks is a bitch, so there you go.
You know, I was watching TV the other day… and it’s still a dude’s world.
Yep.
Even shows like Castle, which are really, really special to me, are occasionally a little too ‘exceptional woman needs to be saved by the dude.’ And the show’s premise is ‘fatherless guy who doesn’t perform masculinity works well with female cop who totally does.’
(and Nathan Fillion is adorable… totally adorable…)
Plus, the lady who plays Beckett was literally the only thing worth watching about Frank Miller taking a crap on The Spirit. Literally. (okay, there was the part where Eva takes all her clothes off… I am a guy, after all. But other than that.)
Ugh, the Mentalist! SOOOOOOOO privileged white-guy! Ugh,Psych! (I love Psych too, but the whole privileged-white-guy schtick is central) Ugh, NAME A FREAKING SHOW!!!
Yeah. I WISH TV WAS MATRIARCHAL!! I frickin` wish.
Three of the five characters on that promo are guys. LOL.
Otherwise, most of the USA series have male leads. Psych, White Collar, Monk (no longer running), Burn Notice, Suits, Royal Pains, Common Law. Their “female” shows seem to be Fairly Legal and Covert Affairs.
