Things I learned from Reddit: Feminists can’t be atheists. Also, they shouldn’t ever try to translate ancient Greek.

Things I learned on Reddit today.

1) From a_weed_wizard in the Men’s Rights subreddit, I learned that feminists cannot be atheists:

GirlWritesWhat agrees:

I’m not sure where those downvotes came from, since everything GirlWritesWhat says is by definition true.

2) From AskHistorians, I learned that feminists trying to correctly translate ancient Greek are evil man-hating monsters. Check out the downvotes on EggyMc!

Obviously, she’s retranslating with malice aforethought!

In this case, it’s easy to tell where at least some of the downvotes are coming from:  A link on the Men’s Rights subreddit.

MRAs: protecting ancient Greek history from MISANDRY since 2012!

Yeah, it’s not really fair to put NWO up against a border collie. We need a dumber breed of dog for comparison purposes.

Hot days are misandry. Even the weather is conspiring to make men miserable by exposing them to women’s legs.

I dunno–dogs are scary smart about reading human beings (I’ve been reading about problems with drug sniffing dogs picking up signals from handlers and because dogs want to please humans, well…..anyway, a blind test showed major FAIL in the reliability rate).

We have co-evolved with dogs — yeah, some breeds have been ruined by breeders doing too much in breeding and too much breeding for looks, etc. (grrrrrrr), but I cannot imagine any dog being as mechanically obsessed and hating as NWO.

Slimemold maybe?

Actually one of the more interesting cases I’ve seen made for the idea that dogs should be considered self-aware and sentient recently was the dogs who worked rescue after 9/11. Many of them got depressed, the handlers thought as a result of the high failure rate. They ended up staging fake rescues just to make the dogs feel better.

@ CassandraSays–I’ve also heard of human efforts to “manage” elephant populations in Africa (e.g., killing elephants and moving them around) have caused a lot of social dysfunction and increased violence, especially among the adolescent males. Basically, one researcher thinks that we’ve caused both social breakdown and widespread PTSD in elephants. I think a lot of animals are smarter than we give them credit for.

I mean if I go and pull my pants down and walk about naked in front of a bunch of little girls, is that OK. They might be curious about my woody.

I dunno…. what is it about your parading around naked in front of a bunch of little girls that gives you a woody?

So if you can tell if women are ovulating by the way they are dressed, if I’m sitting here in my underwear, am I ovulating?

(Hint: this is a TRICK QUESTION.)

@ WordSpinner

I suspect that humans tend to downplay the intelligence of quite a few species because it makes it easier for us to justify doing horrible things to them.

You know, when I was a little girl, my dad frequently walked around the house naked, so I was quite familiar with the look of the pee-pee at a very young age, but somehow, mysteriously, a woody was never involved, because he was just walking back to the bedroom after a shower. I didn’t see a woody until I started having sex. Hmm. The mysteries of life.

Hey, Slavey, weren’t you going to post some pictures of what you think is appropriate clothing for women to wear? We’re still waiting.

What’s funny is that Eggy Mc’s take on the Iliad translation doesn’t exactly make Hera look like a model feminist anyway (which, given her proclivity to go after women already victimized by Zeus, or after their offspring, she wasn’t.) It makes it sound like she played on the other gods’ emotions to gain support for Troy, which makes her quite the politician, but isn’t exactly flattering any more than the straight up “obediance” translation. Yet this is STILL enough to make the guy feel persecuted.

Who cares why prude. A woody is a man giving women a compliment. Woodys are beautiful. Women lust after mens woodys. Enough with the body shaming sweetheart.

Aren’t labs entirely too sweet natured to be Owly? Maybe he can be a Neopolitan mastiff.

I wanna jump on the feminist bandwagon. Let’s sweep away those bad old archaic rules of decency. Everybody who wants to walk around naked can. We can all fuck right in public, anywhere. Bowls of condoms on every street corner. Men fucking men, women fucking women, sex toys of every kind. Boys fucking boys and girls fucking girls. Oh hell, get some animals in there for a really good time. Men and women, boys and girls, come one come all, (little play on words there), for the greatest show on earth.

I mean why not, right?

Lord and Lady, NWO is either a really, really dedicated Poe or is really, actually that much of a dumbfuck. Either way, it sounds like NWOland is a sick, sad world.

Seconding Chihuahua! The ONLY times I’ve been attacked by dogs, it was those little yappy things.

That’s perfect for NWO!

PERFECT!

What causation does NWO have to show that feminism in Russian contributed to things like the fertility rate (could other environmental factors contribute to that? What were long lasting effects of Chernobyl for intstance?) or alcoholism. For that matter, what is the source for that list of data? And how can we talk about feminism and Russia without saying FREE PUSSY RIOT!!!!!!!

@KathleenB: at this point, I don’t think there’s any difference–if he began as a Poe, it’s gone on so long and hard it’s REAL. For some meanings of the word real–I think only twice has he shown any joy in life — once when talking about doing something manly to cable, and when he talks about taking care of his sister’s children when they were all living together.

Well, there was the “all my friends come over and laugh while I post things on manboobz,” but I don’t quite buy that one as much more than truthy.

The dumbest dogs I’ve ever met have been cocker spaniels. Generally adorable, but just not all that bright. Irish setters come in close second.

EggyMc’s reading is good, but I don’t think her translation’s entirely correct. The word in question (Iliad, Book 1, Line 569) is ” ἐπιγνάμψασα”, from “ἐπιγνάμπτω,” “to curve, bend, to bend another to one’s own purpose.” So in my opinion, “Hera bent her own heart” or “wrenched hear heart down,” or something like that, is appropriate.

Hera is a badass who doesn’t take shit from shit, and she is eliciting sympathy from the other gods for Troy, and for herself (the line immediately following says that the gods “were troubled”), but in order to do that she has to master her own pride.

The way she is described as doing this is as though she is looking at her heart, her emotions, from the outside, and the Iliad and Odyssey have a number of passages like this which are really interesting for the view they give of how people thought about emotional conflictedness in the Bronze/Iron Age. There’s a scene in the Odyssey where Odysseus is literally beating on his own chest to bring his heart into the submission of his will, or of the other side of his will.
