I am making a joke kitties lying liars misogyny MRA self-promotion sex the spearhead

A quick preview of my Northwestern talk tonight on “How to hate women and have terrible sex.”

Here’s a preview of the talk I’ll be giving at Northwestern tonight.

Remember, the talk — on “How to hate women and have terrible sex: Misogynistic sex myths, and how they ruin sex for everyone” – will be at 8 PM in Room G02 of Annenberg Hall on the Northwestern Campus in Evanston.

(Here’s a map.)

See you there!

Oh, and also, The Spearhead has discovered that I will be giving a talk. W. F. Price writes about it with his usual objectivity, by which I mean that his piece is filled with lies and weird projection.

EDITED TO ADD: And now the Men’s Rights Subreddit gets in on the fun! Apparently they are also very concerned about my weight.

A where you are a victim of your brain and deserve all our compassion

Pretty sure nobody here has said that. What a lot of people have said is that nobody deserves your self-righteous asshattery.

But by all means, keep telling depressed people they’re worthless for being depressed. I mean, that’s obviously worked so well.

It’s interesting, from what most of you say here there exist two fundamentally different mental conditions, type A where you are a victim of your brain and deserve all our compassion (like contemplating to stab yourself in the spine to make yourself dependent) and type B where you are completely responsible and guilty for what you think and deserve all our ridicule and mockery. Could you explain this to me?

Sure. You are not responsible for things beyond your control, like having a mental disorder. You ARE responsible for things that are entirely under your control, like choosing to be a asshole to people on the internet for the lulz. Being so depressed that you contemplate severe self-harm: not under your control. Trying to taunt depressed people: under your control. Unless you’d like to share your diagnosed condition in which you are compelled, through no fault of your own, to be an asshole on the internet, this really isn’t complicated.

Hey Bon Vayage, you what I think is irresponsible? Telling a depressed person who has thoughts of self-harm how irresponsible and burdensome they are. Laying a guilt trip on someone who aready feels shitty about themselves because they can’t fucking help it is the height of irresponsibility, and is something only a fucking scumbag troll would do.

There are no evopsych departments, and the entire reason evopsych is junk science is that it isn’t science; there’s no evidence behind it. If it did, it’d have to be taken seriously. That’s really what it comes down to; evidence. Modern medical science is by no means perfect, but it is actually evidence based.

Everyone deserves compassion because we are all people. People get compassion, but they are also expected to give compassion and may be regarded poorly if they don’t. I know–what a complicated principle!

Polliwog, (ancillarially to falconer) Have you access to an OT? Adapting to things like becoming wheelchair bound is what they do.

Probably not for a while at least, unfortunately – my insurance kind of sucks, which means I’ve pretty much burned through all my available funds and then some just paying for the medical treatment I’ve received so far. I wouldn’t even have the wheelchair at all if I hadn’t found a family member willing to donate her old one to me. (Yay, American health care system. *sigh*)

Most universities do have a psychology department, but the responses of most faculty members to evopsych could essentially be summed up as “LOL”.

Why so much faith in the scientific establishment?

Because the alternative is guessing.

How is “I just decided not to trust the science on depression” fundamentally any different than “I just decided not to trust the science on why gasoline burns” or “I just decided not to trust the science on what causes the common cold”? You’re looking at rigorously tested data and just deciding to replace it with something you prefer. That’s not a way to know things.

Hey asshole: Fuck yourself. Fuck you, fuck your guilt trips, and fuck you patronizing “you want to be dependent” (no, I don’t, I want to not deal with life because of my terrible fear of being dependent) “you’re selfish” hateful bullshit. Do you think I don’t know that wanting to stab myself would have terrible consequences? Do you think I don’t know that it would be a fucking horrible decision?

You are a terrible person. Die in a fire, and leave me the fuck alone.

Well, personally I think that EVEN mental illness isn’t an excuse to be a douchebag to people .

For the record, if I were to, say, shoot myself in the back or whatever, I wouldn’t try to cover up the origin of that injury, and as such my insurance would likely deny me any coverage because the damage done would be self-inflicted. So I wouldn’t be stealing anything from anyone, and you can fuck yourself twice over. Why don’t you go scream at the transabled community while you’re at it? I’m sure no one’s ever told them how selfish and dishonest they are before.

drst: #2 dear bonvoyage – fuck you. The average motorcycle rider or bungee fanatic does way more harm to my insurance premiums than a person with any sort of chronic illness

Probably not true.

Per the NTSA, (Rehabilitation Costs and Long-Term Consequences of Motor Vehicle Injury Inpatient rehabilitation costs for motor vehicle injuries average $11,265 per patient (in 2002 dollars, and excluding motorcycle injuries) and $13,200 for motorcycle injuries.

The total costs, for non-motorcycle injuries, in 2000, was estimated at 127.5 million, USD, and for motorcycles at 16.3 million, USD.

Public funds were spent at a higher ratio for non-motorcycle crash injury costs (26.1 percent) than for motorcycle crash costs (19.5 percent.

The larger sum was for acute care hospitalisation as the result of motor vehicle accidents: By comparison,
including professional fees, we estimate the acute care hospitalization costs for motor vehicle injuries were $3.665 billion in 2000 and $422 million for motorcycle injuries. These acute care bills included some bundled rehabilitation costs.

3.6 billion, vs. 422 million.

While it’s true that, per vehicle, the average is higher for motorcycles than cars (4,766 dollar per motorcycle, and 2,068, per car) that has more to with the much higher number of cars on the road, as seen when one looks at the cost per 1,000 miles travelled. Motorcycles generate an expense of, 2,090, to cars expenses of 178. (in 1997 dollars, per NHTSA Costs of Injuries Resulting from Motorcycle Crashes: A Literature Review

Even in that, the subset of costs is (as one might expect, disproportionately higher among those motorcycle riders who don’t wear helmets; just as the costs of an accident rise when automobile users fail to use seatbelts.

So, no, the, average motorcycle rider isn’t adding that much to premiums, even the minority who wear no helmet isn’t, not when the annual cost resultant from motorcycle crashes is less than 500 million dollars, in aggregate.

I have no way to see what the “average” person with a chronic illness costs, because that’s a huge category, from ,my disability (which requires about a dozen checkups a year (four GP, 6-8 specialist), and some NSAIDs, to someone with late stage diabetes, on insulin, and dialysis four times a week.

But the aggregatge total of costs from chronic illnesses is almost certainly a greater portion of health insurance premiums than motorcycle riders.

Fuck! There are two links in that piece. The last sentence of the blue is a second link. Dave, if you could fix that I’d be grateful.

@lauralot: “Transabled” is a new one on me.

Wikipedia, that bastion of knowledge, that redoubt of totally-invulnerable-to-misinformation, redirects me to the page on body integrity identity disorder.

Is that correct?

lauralot89

It’s all right, David. I expected about as much from some troll when I posted about my self-harm ideation. God knows I’ve said enough shit like that to myself.

lauralot89

@Falconer: Yeah, it’s body integrity identity disorder. I found out about it while trying to figure out why I was so obsessed with the thought of severely harming myself. There’s a blog run by people with BIID, transabled.org, where I got a lot of my information on it.

I don’t know what bonvoyage’s political affiliation is, but with the way some republicans/libertarians talk about “leeches” and “worthless” people to society, it wouldn’t surprise me if they turned out to be eugenicists. Funny how the right is associated with such extreme hatred. Sorry bonvoyage and you other assholes, my brain doesn’t have bootstraps. If it did I wouldn’t have dysthymia and have to rely on very expensive pills to keep it under control.

Bigots 😉

Thank you, Lauralot.

And thank you for sharing about your self-harm. That was brave, and I’m sorry bonvoyage decided to attack you with it.
