The Misogyny Album

Tired of reading long, rambling, barely coherent misogynist tirades? Would you prefer misogyny in convenient, e-z to understand chart form? Well, you’re in luck, because a Redditor calling himself firstEncounter has assembled a handy imgur album of “women logic” graphics and comics. Here’s one of them:

Oh, let’s do one more:

Oh, let’s make it an even three:

If you enjoyed these, there are 29 more for you here.

Why, you ask, has firstEncounter gone to the trouble of assembling such a giant stinky pile of misogyny? It’s not why you think! He just likes to put things in categories! As he explains:

I actually have entire imgur albums categorized by content. …

I don’t hate women, seriously. Nor do I believe the images within the album are accurate depictions of standard women behavior. I simply found them entertaining to some extent.

So there you have it!

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, firstEncounter’s little collection received (let’s all say it together) DOZENS OF UPVOTES on Reddit.

And thanks, ShitRedditSays, for pointing me to this.

Back in the day, I learned from dating a couple of honest-to-God millionaires that I don’t like rich guys as partners. The power differential made me really uncomfortable.

YES. This is why I get nervous when anyone wants to buy me anything.

ok, this is a little random, but it’s Friday and I know that there’s a good number of literature geeks who post here, so…

Does anyone else see the MRA movement as a collection of J. Alfred Prufrocks? I re-read the poem “the lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock” recently, and the whole time I was thinking “if you update the language, you’d have a hard time telling Prufrock apart from the regular trolls (except for the lack of violence on his part…)

I’ve been thinking that for days and just needed to get it out… carry on… XD

Never been with a millionaire, but I dated a rich guy once and it was uncomfortable, because your options look like this:

A) Go on cheap dates only, even though he could afford much fancier, to avoid choosing between B and C.
B) Go on nice dates and go halfsies, even though you can’t really afford it, spending more than you’re comfortable with, to avoid C.
C) Go on nice dates and let him pay, and get stuck in that ooky “You don’t have to sleep with me or agree with everything I say, but I did just spend a hundred dollars to entertain you…” place.

(It was also uncomfortable because he was an abusive douchebag, but I can’t assume that’s directly because of his wealth. Being treated like a Big Important Person at a young age wasn’t doing his sense of humility and fairness any favors, though.)

@Kate Hmm, I never really thought about that. I guess I should confess that one of my favorite poems is Prufrock. It always struck me as regretful and sad.

To be honest, I do not blame Quackers for being gun shy. The last person I met off of OKCupid is a closet MRAer who refuses to admit it.

Also since for a good chunk of history women had no control over who they were hitched to-why would this develop into “like money?”

MRAs happen when God’s code hits an endless loop.

Kate: I dunno. Prufrock is a lot more… pitiable, I think, than most of the trolls. And less of an overt misogynist. I think most MRAs are sad and lonely and depressed and feel like a failure, but it takes a certain kind of personality to go from sad and lonely and depressed and feeling like a failure to ALPHA FUCK BITCH FUCK, you know? And in my reading Prufrock doesn’t have that kind of personality.

RE: Holly

I have an extremely wealthy friend who works in patents. We’re purely platonic (he’s only into cis men, and I’m monomarried), but he likes to treat me with food when he comes by.

It’s often extremely uncomfortable for me, for the reasons you elucidated above, so one day he sat me down and pretty much went, “Look. I know this makes you uncomfortable, and I know why. But please let me do this. I enjoy doing it, and I don’t want you to worry. I just want to give you good food.”

I see him seldom enough (couple states between me and him) that thus far, this has worked, and he also is quite willing to go cheapsies so it only happens every once in a while. He’s a good friend.

I say “fuck” and “social construction” a lot in the hopes that this will make MRAs not want to date me. XD So far it has worked.

Also I quote LOTR to drive off Cosmo guys.

Stand back! Finally I get to use my undergraduate degree!

The narrator of Prufrock is, in broad strokes, frustrated on several fronts. He’s frustrated in terms of success, he’s not Hamlet, he’s an attendant lord, there’s some use in him but he’s no one really important. He’s frustrated sexually, although it is a very Edwardian kind of sexuality that can be tied back in to making an advantageous marriage. He feels the advance of years, and he is very neurotic about his bald spot. He’s frustrated at his inability to communicate with women.

That’s what I’d say about him if he were a person. This is certainly not the space to get into humongous arguments over Eliot, but I will grant you that Elliot was fairly conservative in his day and age (Virginia Woolf glosses his initals as “Terribly Stern”) and I’m sure that included plenty of ideas of what women were for and what a woman’s virtue involved. Those are exactly the sorts of ideas that the MRAs are so fond of, regardless of how they twist and strain them, because those ideas give them weapons to attack women with.

But I resist comparing Elam (say) to Prufrock because I want to like Prufrock.

Just some quick thoughts. I think there’s plenty there to find parallel between Prufrock and the MRAs but the MRAs have lots of vitriol while Prufrock is primarily depressed.

@Falconer I liked your Mansplaination though! Yes, Eliot is rather stuffy but I adore The Wasteland and, of course, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

The sexism of the time aside, Prufrock can represent anyone who feels their advancing age and reflects on the coulda, shoulda, and wouldas.

I haven’t read any Eliot in decades, but I’m for it–my sense of the voice in most of his works was yep, typical misogynistic, why bother, yawn, I’ma gonna go read H.D. or Doris Lessing, etc. etc.

A shitload of the dead white male canon is sexist and misogynistic as hell (and I’m talking texts, though the same can be said of some authors).

ON a sadder note, Adrienne Rich has died. She and Joanna Russ were my two major feminist mentors and influences over the decades.

I should note re: Prufrock that I studies the HIGH MANLY MODERNISTS during the 70s in a mostly male department, mostly pretty sexist and misogynistic, and that a different set of teachers might have done a lot to give me a different reading. But at least they didn’t say, as one Americanist was prone to do, that he didn’t want women in his courses because MANLY FRONTIER LITERATURE IS SO MANLY.

Men are genetically programmed to desire attractive women because beauty is a signal of good health, able to birth healthy babies. Women are genetically programmed to desire men of means because babies cost money to raise.

Good lord, Ruby, are original thoughts too much for you? Do they see how you are and just bounce right off? Got any more pearls of wisdom?

I have this enormous problem where I’m a feminist and all my favorite “classic” authors are dead white European men. >.> I mean, I probably SHOULD like Aphra Behn better than Milton, esp. given that Milton was an asshole, but otoh Paradise Lost squeeeeeeee!

Similarly, I <3 Eliot with all the <3. He's a misogynistic asshole, but The Wasteland is just… yesssss.
