Problems commenting?

[NOTE: COMPLETELY REVISED WITH ACTUAL USEFUL INFORMATION THIS TIME]

A number of commenters have been getting the error message “”You must be logged in to make
a comment from that address” when they try to comment.

This is because WordPress has made a change to how it handles comments. Here’s their explanation:

Now, if someone tries to comment with an email address that’s attached to a WordPress.com account, they’ll need to sign into WordPress.com before they can comment.

If commenters have forgotten their password they can request a reset:
http://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

If you don’t have a WordPress account, this shouldn’t affect you.

You can contact the WordPress people if you’re still having problems. Or, presumably, switch to using a non-Wordpress-linked email. (Which will send you to moderation for your first post.)

Thanks to Viscaria for the info.

EDITED TO ADD: Some people are still having trouble even with new emails/accounts. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Or contact WordPress at the linky link above.

It worked yesterday just by logging into gravatar, but now it seems to want me to log directly into wordpress. So I tried that…

I’m kind of relieved by this. Prevents impersonation.

RaspberryBeret13 is in fact me, Ithiliana.

I refuse to let the blankety blank program associate every single thing I’ve done with similar emails, and I’m not that happy with WordPress generally, so I made a new WordPress blog.

So I’ll sign in as raspberryberet13 on wordpress and comment here.

testing to see if new gravatar account with stupidwordpress user name will let me use my nifty medusa icon!

Nahida: I don’t think it will prevent impersonation–somebody just has to set up new wordpress blog account with new impersonation email and can go ahead and post. It maybe adds one or two more steps, but our sockpuppet trolls seems fairly determined to take those extra steps to climb Mt. Let’s Make Asses of Ourselves

raspberryberet13: it prevents it in the sense that now no one else can use the email associated with my account and pretend to be me. I had an issue before with some asshole using my person email address (with my full name and everything) to impersonate me in wordpress comments, and the blog owner would believe the comment is from me because email address is mine and associated with my blog. But now it’s tied to an account. So I can just use a diff email to comment if I don’t want to go through the hassle of signing in, and no one can use my private address to pretend to be me. xD

@Nahida: Ah, yes, that’s a good point. I had fan pseud emails I used for online stuff, not a personal one with my name, but there would still be an element of risk.

(Call me Ithiliana if you like–that’s my regular fan pseud–I just couldn’t get wordpress not to ‘recognize’ all my names/email addresses, and let me post until I came up with raspberryberet and even then had to add 13)

Gotta agree with hellkell. It’s really annoying, especially on the phone. It’s especially annoying that they didn’t tell everyone what was going on for quite a while.

ithiliana, if you want your new account to display your old name, you can probably finagle it to do what you want it to do 🙂

Viscaria: I could do it via the gravatar, possibly, BUT even with the new raspberry email, gravatar, and wordpress blog, stoopidWP is still telling me (you must sign into post with that account).

I just hope if I sign enough posts, and keep using my Medusa! icon, the regulars will recognize me.

The occasional trolls we can baffle with my CUNNING! disguise! (aka: a raspberry beret!)

rm, telling me I have to use the wordpress account

I blame google, this mania for “let’s connect everything with the same email addresses no matter what usernames are used.”

Oops, hit the “Post Comment” button too soon. Hover over your account name up at the top right corner of your screen, and then choose the option “Edit My Profile.” Then, change “display my name publicly as” to whatever you’d like. 🙂

@Viscaria: Yay! It worked!

Thank you!

It occurs to me that you may have taken my advice, and now are stuck in moderation because of it :S if so, I’m sorry! I didn’t think about it.

Annoying WP changes are annoying.

Yeah, I found out about this when my sister couldn’t comment on my blog. It’s a feature, not a bug!

Well, this is a drag. Looks as if you can’t delete unused WordPress accounts either.

Testing to see if I can post in such a way that it doesn’t link to a deleted blog which could reveal my meatspace identity with its title.

David, could you delete the above comment please?

Well, bummer. I don’t log in with my wordpress account because I don’t need MRAs hassling me on my blog. It’s not a big deal because I’ve only commented a couple of times here ever, and I have a backup email address I can log in with, but seriously, WordPress, that is a dumb policy.
