Reddit's pedophile problem in the spotlight again: Goodbye, r/jailbait, hello r/preteengirls

Well, not so okay, really.

UPDATE: Reddit has now removed “all subreddits that focus on sexualization of children.” And it only took them six years to realize that maybe catering to peodophiles was not such a good idea.

Yet another Reddit pedophilia explosion, this time centering around r/preteen_girls, a subreddit which is evidently filled with sexualized photos of preteen girls. (You thought the banning of Reddit’s Jailbait subreddit solved the problem?  Nope; Reddit still hosts numerous subreddits catering to pedos.)

The subreddit came under some criticism elsewhere on Reddit a couple of days ago, and countless creeps leapt to its defense.

I don’t have the stomach to dig into this one, but ShitRedditSays is on the case.

Here are screenshots of a bunch of comments defending the subreddit, the pictures, and creepiness itself, collected by SRS regular littletiger. They’re all pretty repugnant, but this one really takes repugnance to a new level:

Here’s an SRS thread discussing the screenshots and the controversy in general.

Many of the defenders of r/preteen_girls have responded to the criticism by angrily asserting that the pictures there aren’t nude or pornographic. Which is not, actually, true, as this SRS thread makes clear. Indeed, here is a screenshot of the incredibly creepy discussion that ensued in r/preteen_girls when one nude picture got posted. (Note: this screenshot shows a small censored thumbnail of the nude picture in question.)

Naturally, all this led to yet more highly upvoted pedophilia jokes, something Reddit already has quite a surplus of.

(Thanks to SRS once again for pointing me to this comment.)

Here’s a discussion of the original thread (in r/wtf) in which some questioned the propriety of Reddit hosting a forum devoted to suggestive and possibly pornographic pictures of children; and another SRS thread highlighting one of the creepier r/preteen_girls defenders. (And if you want more, here’s that guy’s highly disturbing comment history.)

For more on Reddit’s pedophilia problem, see my previous posts on the r/jailbait controversies.

Reddit used to be owned by Conde Nast. It is still owned by Conde Nast’s parent company Advance Publications. Why would this publishing giant, which owns dozens of media properties ranging from the New Yorker and Vanity Fair to the uber-wholesome Sunday newspaper supplement Parade, want to associate itself with a site that continue to host forums devoted to sexualized photos of underage girls?

NOTE: None of the links in this post go to r/preteengirls itself; they are all to discussions of it elsewhere.  None of them link to any of the pictures in question, though one, as I noted, contains a censored thumbnail image of one picture posted there.

I have to say, it was pretty glorious watching the SomethingAwful goons compile the RedditBomb and then see the effects of it within only a few hours. A good old fashioned Goon Rush is a fine sight to behold.

and omg why the hell did i go read that post ???

i can only speak for myself, but i am NOT a whore, and the last guy who tried to treat me as one received a broken arm and some cracked ribs for his efforts. the ONLY person who gets to define me is ME, and all the assholes in the world won’t change that.

So sorry we interfered with your leering at children, assholes.

P. S. not everyone is on the side of the leering assholes, and some of us are armed and already pissed off.

I went to look at the beatwomen reddit, and discovered that I can’t up/downvote comments.

Which makes me think the comments there may be a better guide to the sentiments of the denizens than in other reddits.

This is both pleasing, and appalling. It’s appalling because, well those are some fucked up sentiments. It’s pleasing because with 1,200 people they can’t get more overt support for the shit they say.

@Amused: but all rape accusations are false. Of course.

And women who do not immediately enthusiastically consent to a cup of coffee in a stranger’s hotel room in a foreign country at 4 a.. are…………….creating a culture of fear and implying that women are weak and are accusing all NICE GUYS TM of being rapists…..

Kirbywarp:

Main reason I said that was because there was some satement in an AVFM thingy that said that they wanted the UN to ensure that “no laws designed to protect minors should be used to prosecute them.” I still have no idea what they were getting at with that…

thebewilderness:

Kirby, I think they are talking about the children who were charged with child porn for sexting pictures of themselves to each other.

It occurred to me in the shower this morning that I was going at it backwards.

When the sexting thing blew up, there was a lot of huffing and puffing from authorities (principals, parents, legislators, etc.) about the girls who photographed themselves. That’s who I was considering, the girls who photographed themselves as a subset of the victims of exploitation.

The problem for my argument is, those photos got out onto the web because someone distributes them. In the case of the sexting photos, many boys aren’t trustworthy with nude photos sent in privacy because they boast to their buddies about what studs they are. See, this girl totally sent me photos!

I think the MRA line about “prosecuting minors” is there to protect boys who forward pictures of their girlfriends to their buddies, and that the girls who take these photos of themselves haven’t been considered at all. (I also don’t think they’re considering anybody but straight, cis boys because their ideas of gender are severely blinkered.)

Kirby, when I replied to you about why should we prosecute the subjects of the photos I hadn’t considered that minors are sometimes involved in distribution. I’m sorry.

I’d actually be okay with prosecuting minors who distribute porn of other minors, just not okay with prosecuting them as adults or pedophiles. Invasion of privacy or something, I don’t know — but teenage boys are absolutely old enough to know better than to forward a private photo around the school. :

About that r/beatingwomen post. I’m pretty damned sure that they don’t speak for the men I know well, and they wouldn’t be thanked for thinking they do. Seems like they’re the ones who hate men (all pedophiles, all the time! and violent!), not us feminist types.

So wait… about that r/beatingwomen post… The guy gets through explaining that no matter what women do, men will always be lusty and creepy and wanting-to-rapey, so tough shit… then concludes with: “You. Are. Whores.”

The fuck? How… he was just talking about how men are salivating monsters unable to control base urges, only desiring to fuck and rape, and somehow that leads to the conclusion that women are the unsavory ones? Fuck… If this guy were correct, I’d have to seriously consider becoming the man-killing feminist these guys want me to be.

Speaking of r/beatingwomen and all men being all wanting-to-rapey all the time, please see this clip from Fox News’ Liz Trotta on sexual abuse in the military: http://mediamatters.org/blog/201202120002
Money quote:
“So, you have this whole bureaucracy upon bureaucracy being built up with all kinds of levels of people to support women in the military who are now being raped too much.” (Formerly, I guess women were raped “just right?”)
Anyway, apparently men merely being in “close contact” with women is what makes them all wanting-to-rapey. So, that’s solved.

So, apparently, I’m a slavering beast, and women are evil for provoking me?

How illuminating. /sarcasm

How are people begining to monitor Reddit more and more, now? I have a feeling that while we have won a victory, there is more that is yet to come.

Both boys and girls must have unique gender specifications and they must be consistent with each others sexuality from younger ages, that is not wrong. They must raise in a heterosexual way. Parents must teach them to accept the real nature of sexuality from younger ages. We must protect children from pedophiles because of sexually abusing them may complicate their future sex life.

Man, what if homosexuality is chosen, what if it isn’t natural? Absolutely nothing suggests this is true, but, you know, just to play along with this shit, what if?

It still doesn’t do any goddamn harm to anybody.
