Upvoted on Reddit: “The problems in the sex [tourism] industry are mostly women’s fault.”

Today in Did That Really Get 196 Upvotes on Reddit: A Redditor claiming to be the owner of a brothel in Thailand explains how what he euphemistically calls the “problems in the sex industry” are mostly the fault of evil, lazy whores. Literally.

Let’s join the discussion already in progress. (ChaChaKrahp is the alleged brothel owner.)

A little further on in the discussion he makes this charming claim:

According to him, sex trafficking isn’t really a big issue, but when it does occur it  “is more likely to victimize men” than women. (The main victims in his mind being trafficked men (by which I assume he means transwomen)  … and male sex tourists.)

Those poor, poor Western sex tourists, suffering so at the hands of women and girls who’ve been kidnapped and sold into sex slavery!

But let’s just put this whole “trafficking” thing out of our heads. As ChaChaKrahp explains it, prostitution in Thailand is just a way for lazy ladies to make money. It’s totally on the up and up – “[j]ust like college girls in the US that work as strippers for $300 per night instead of picking strawberries for $50 per day.”

The only real problem is all those evil ladies ripping off dudes.

Did that last bit sound a little … MRAish to you?

Though this discussion isn’t in the Men’s Rights subreddit., ChaChaKrahp shares a lot of opinions and obsessions with the MRA crowd, peppering the discussion with MRA talking points on everything from dangerous jobs and breast cancer funding to  false rape accusations and paternity fraud. While he claims not to “give a shit about MRA groups,” he links to prominent Father’s Rights site fathersandfamilies.com, and rails endlessly about the evils of feminism. He walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.

While ChaChaKrahp seems quite sincere in his beliefs, this is the Internet, and so there’s a chance that this “brothel owner” is not actually a brothel owner at all, just some dude making this all up for Reddit karma points and lulz.

Even if that’s the case, we still have all those hundreds of Redditors who read his comments and happily upvoted them, either because they thought what he said was sensible or true, or because the thought of owning a brothel in Thailand gave them boners.

The question remains: does Reddit attract the worst representatives of those in its heavily young, male, geek demographic, or is this how most of these (mostly) guys really think — even if they don’t usually say so out loud?

(Thanks to ShitRedditSays for pointing me to this lovely thread.)

EDITED TO ADD: Brothel Owner under attack (by a few people)! Send in the r/mensrights upvote brigade to upvote him even more than he’s already being upvoted!!!

Elam hates Australia too? Huh. I wonder why.

“I still hate Hugo Swyzer! I just hate that people go on feminist websites and attack him all the time, sometimes where it’s not even relevant, like I do!”

I think it was him, anyway. Certainly there was some manosphere buzz about Australia becoming a feminist gulag. Perhaps it’s because we recently got a female Prime Minister? I’ll try to find an article or something. I swear I didn’t make this up.

Eventually my mommy took me to a shrink, turned out I was just shy. I could have told them that, of course, but in this day and age you need a doctor for everything, I guess.

MRAL, you know dick about shit in general, so why don’t you shut YOUR piehole? Fuck off and don’t come back until you’ve lived a little.

I just find it awfully convienent that you suddenly have sympathy for him, now that he has been critiqued for, well writing about the attempted murder of a woman to comfort a friend who was feeling bad about abusing his dog.

Actually with Elam maybe it would be more efficient to compile a list of things that he doesn’t hate. So…other MRAs, shitty pop-rock anthems, and the internet. Anything else?

“writing about the attempted murder of a woman to comfort a friend who was feeling bad about abusing his dog.”

Wait, what? I’m confused as to how this was supposed to help.

Yeah, Cassandra, the whole Hugo thing is fucked beyond belief. Basically, he was trying to get his friend not to beat themselves for bad behavior. I KNOW, right?

I wasn’t special needs or anything, and it’s not like the teachers ever said anything so far as I know. It was just a hunch my mommy had, and it turned out to be wrong.

So he wanted the friend to not feel bad about abusing his pet? Sometimes I feel that Hugo missed some important parts of the whole being a Christian thing.

@CassandraSays

Ha! I can imagine, that reaction is absolutely universal around the world!!

Wait, what? I’m confused as to how this was supposed to help.

It was special.

And MRAL, if you’re trying to claim that you don’t understand why feminists are speaking out against someone, who attempted to kill a woman and slept with his female students, having a prominent space in feminism… again I call trolling

The claim that we’d be totally cool with a woman with Hugo’s history is particularly special.

The autism scare has gone beyond ridiculous. They tried to diagnose my little cousin with autism as well. Luckily my aunt went to get a second opinion. turns out she just had mild selective mutism.

So you think this has NOTHING to do with Schwyzer being male?

Ron Paul, I think. That should probably go without saying though,

UPDATE ON ELAM AND AUSTRALIA: It’s because we’re enacting a government plan to stop violence against women and children (AFAIK, it’s like the USian VAWA in that it’s more a general anti-DV and anti-child abuse thing that’s been misnamed), apparently. How heartless of our feminist rulers, wanting to stop violence. As a man, I’m truly quivering.

I don’t understand how a man who has been abusive towards women, and done nothing to repent, can stand as a voice in feminism. Yes it has to do with him being a man (it also has to do with the whole not paying any penance or making any restitutions).

He hates Australia because of some new DV legislation called The Plan. Apparently it’s ignoring male victims and leaving out that women abuse their kids more. I didn’t really look into it because I don’t live in Australia, but from the brief scan I did The Plan did acknowledge male victims.

I keep hearing all this stuff about DV being 50/50 and all these hordes of abused men and repressed studies etc….but here’s another non-US country that seems to think DV against women is problem enough that it needs legislation. I just have a very hard time believing that there’s some massive feminist conspiracy covering male DV up and that feminists hold all this power over government which is still male dominated. Australia’s bureau of statistics say women are greater victims of DV (according to the footnote The Plan used when citing statistics) The US bureau of statistics says the same. I dunno. I just wish someone would shut the hell up and actually open some shelters for men rather than attack services for women. It’s so counterproductive its actually really frustrating to read about.

Actually, Hugo is getting the kid gloves treatment mostly, plenty of feminists, including Marcotte of Pandagon are still linking to his stuff and calling for much forgiveness.

A woman who posted the same confession would truly be drummed out of the movement, as far as that is possible on the internet.

Right, if this was Valenti- and she had done the same shit, with the genders reversed- you think there would be a similar reaction?

I mean, I like it in a sense, because it’s distracting him from male-bashing. But it’s hilarious how well it illustrates the double standards.

and holy hell please ban MRAL…funny how this thread is now becoming all about him again

The backlash that Hugo is experiencing is about him being a hypocrite with an, um, unique sense of ethics and interpretation of Christianity, not his penis. The only sense in which it’s about his penis is in that he has chosen to use said penis in ethically questionable ways, and then expected forgiveness because he’s a changed man now.

It’s rather a similar pattern to the one that you yourself played out here, actually, it’s just that the backlash against Hugo is more polite since he doesn’t have a history of calling rape victims liars, etc, ie. he hasn’t directly abused the people who are now losing their patience with him or expressed generalized hostility towards them.

Bostonian, I just don’t believe that. I really don’t. In fact, I think it would pass without all that much incident.

Oh Quackers, that’s easy. Multiple nations are focusing on male-on-female DV because women have all the power and no one cares about men, even the men who make up the vast majority of politicians and policy-makers. No one’s running shelters for male DV victims because none of the people who donate to charity or award grant money care about men.

Somehow, resentment against women is widespread even though, simultaneously, enough men have been coopted by feminism that our society keeps men down, despite men still holding nearly all the positions of power. I can’t quite get this to work out numerically, but that’s probably because, as a woman, I suck at math.
