Upvoted on Reddit: “The problems in the sex [tourism] industry are mostly women’s fault.”

Today in Did That Really Get 196 Upvotes on Reddit: A Redditor claiming to be the owner of a brothel in Thailand explains how what he euphemistically calls the “problems in the sex industry” are mostly the fault of evil, lazy whores. Literally.

Let’s join the discussion already in progress. (ChaChaKrahp is the alleged brothel owner.)

A little further on in the discussion he makes this charming claim:

According to him, sex trafficking isn’t really a big issue, but when it does occur it  “is more likely to victimize men” than women. (The main victims in his mind being trafficked men (by which I assume he means transwomen)  … and male sex tourists.)

Those poor, poor Western sex tourists, suffering so at the hands of women and girls who’ve been kidnapped and sold into sex slavery!

But let’s just put this whole “trafficking” thing out of our heads. As ChaChaKrahp explains it, prostitution in Thailand is just a way for lazy ladies to make money. It’s totally on the up and up – “[j]ust like college girls in the US that work as strippers for $300 per night instead of picking strawberries for $50 per day.”

The only real problem is all those evil ladies ripping off dudes.

Did that last bit sound a little … MRAish to you?

Though this discussion isn’t in the Men’s Rights subreddit., ChaChaKrahp shares a lot of opinions and obsessions with the MRA crowd, peppering the discussion with MRA talking points on everything from dangerous jobs and breast cancer funding to  false rape accusations and paternity fraud. While he claims not to “give a shit about MRA groups,” he links to prominent Father’s Rights site fathersandfamilies.com, and rails endlessly about the evils of feminism. He walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.

While ChaChaKrahp seems quite sincere in his beliefs, this is the Internet, and so there’s a chance that this “brothel owner” is not actually a brothel owner at all, just some dude making this all up for Reddit karma points and lulz.

Even if that’s the case, we still have all those hundreds of Redditors who read his comments and happily upvoted them, either because they thought what he said was sensible or true, or because the thought of owning a brothel in Thailand gave them boners.

The question remains: does Reddit attract the worst representatives of those in its heavily young, male, geek demographic, or is this how most of these (mostly) guys really think — even if they don’t usually say so out loud?

(Thanks to ShitRedditSays for pointing me to this lovely thread.)

EDITED TO ADD: Brothel Owner under attack (by a few people)! Send in the r/mensrights upvote brigade to upvote him even more than he’s already being upvoted!!!

belledame222 “Can I just suggest again that banning MRAL might be therapeutic for him as well as the regulars?”

-I’m so seconding this (or thirding or fourthing or fifthing). He’s not going to stop, and he’s said everything he’s going to say, and that’s that. He needs to get the hell out of here and get on with his life. He’ll stomp his feet and feel all rejected and misunderstood and called evil, and he’ll probably try to make a sock or two, but eventually, he’ll move on. As long as the door is open, he’ll keep coming in.

“MRA’s don’t talk about rule number 3 “Hot men” because “females are more turned on by emotions than visual stimulus” (ie fundamental christian’s advocating conservative dress/modesty for FEMALES only because females could never be turned on by hot men taking off their shirts?)”

You rang? I mean, since we’ve already posted the NSFW videos…

Actually in a way I have to give MRAL some credit for acknowledging that women do indeed like men to be attractive. That’s more than most PUAs and MRAs do. It’s just a shame that the next thing out of his mouth is always some variation of “and that’s wrong! and unfair! and therefore if a man isn’t hot you must be spitting on him!”.

Belledame222 -” it’s like Stuart Smalley from hell.”

.

XD Perfect!

My fear – And I’m so glad Hugo is being taken to task for all his myriad bullshit – Is that he’s starting to LOVE being the divisive guy, and the new sort of attention that comes with it, and he’s gonna love painting this as good forgiving feminists vs. unforgiving man-hating feminists as far and wide as he can. And at the same time, you know, he doesn’t HATE the bad unforgiving man-hating feminists, cause it’s true he did awful things, but you have to face up to the darkness and come through it and blahblahblahblah … And he’s gonna revel in it, because this is just more, if slightly different, food for his I Have Sinned complex. *puke*

See at 4:08 where he goes on about how his critics consider him a snake in the feminist garden of eden, needing to be beheaded, for example. The whole interview about the “kerfluffle” is amazingly revealing, if you can stomach it.

Kerfuffle is certainly an interesting word to use to describe people’s reactions to a confession of attempted murder. I mean it’s great that he didn’t go through with it and all, but really.

If MRAL gets to proclaim safe listening bullcrap like Radiohead as genius, I guess I’ll just have to post some real avant-garde stuff. 🙂

On the one hand, we have pandering fluff that takes no effort to discern and understand. On the other (mine) we have thought-provoking classical or neoclassical art that takes a sophisticated mind. I know which one I’m going for.

So your a hipster now? lol

My view on Hugo Schwyzer is that I don’t want to kick him out of the human race or anything, I don’t want him in prison (although that’s where he’d be but for the magic privilege card that makes people go “he’s an addict, he needs healing and recovery not punishment” instead of “he’s an addict, lock ‘im up”), but I also think he shouldn’t be in a position of authority in feminism.

He definitely gets speaking engagements and press because he’s the person who a lot of outsiders believe gives feminism a nice* respectable* accessible* non-threatening* professional* face*, and that’s what pisses me the hell off.

*male

Every time he gets his writing published or is asked to speak for feminism, I just think about all the people with so much more lived experience and equally good or better qualifications (who never tried to kill anyone) who aren’t getting this money and aren’t getting this voice.

It also bothers me tremendously that all his offenses have been against women and in very gendered ways. This isn’t “a guy who used to be messed up,” this is specifically a guy who used to mess up women. It wasn’t just an attempted murder. It was attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, who was helpless because she’d apparently just been brutally raped. Trying to kill a woman because she was raped is a whole new level of misogynist violence.

Like I said, I don’t want to set Hugo Schwyzer on fire or anything. But I also don’t want to see him treated like a Feminist Authority.

It’s obviously really bad for him being here, but I’m with Rutee. I would like to see him banned because he spews the same bullshit over and over and I’m sick of it. The fact that it would be good for him is incidental.

Let him whine about how hard his life is over at some Radiohead fan forums or something.

This is my issue with the whole thing. It’s not just that he used to be fucked up, it’s that when he was fucked up and acting out it was always aimed at women. I’ve known plenty of addicts, and most of them have never tried to kill an intimate partner because she was raped. Or slept with their students. Or any of the rest of it. And I see no indication that he’s actually changed – there’s always that veiled threat that what if his “recovery” lapses? His attitude towards women is, honestly, really weird, and not particularly feminist. It’s like a gendered version of the white man’s burden crap that you see a lot of clueless white liberals lapse into when talking about race.

The narrative of, well I used to be a man who preyed on women, but you see I’ve moved beyond that now, does not seem to me to be a healthy one for feminism to be centering. Especially from someone who seems to see his abusive past as a positive qualification. It’s cultish, and it creeps me out.

@Jill: I gosh I miss 90’s female pop artists. They were all about being awesome and wore tank tops and combats. Now, female pop artists talk about sex and partying and wear mini skirts and stilettos. It saddens me =(

To be honest, I don’t understand how he still has a job as a professor after having said what he has about sleeping with students. I’ve seen profs get fired for way less than that. Since when is “well, I don’t do it anymore, as far as you know,” a get out of jail free card?

Same reason that being an addict didn’t get him sent to jail.

-Also that. I really don’t care so much about his damn therapy. He’s gotten a tremendous amount of goodwill here in proportion to his awfulness, and so I think even anybody who still thinks there’s something to be done for the guy can do it better by banning him. I personally don’t give an airborne copulation.

– I don’t know the details and I can’t be quoted on this, but I heard who his family is may have something to do with it. So not just privelege, but good old fashioned nepotism. Treat that as a rumor, but it sounds way plausible to me.
