Sady Doyle of Tiger Beatdown fame has a great piece up at In These Times on the ways in which the Internet has helped to highlight virulent and violent misogyny — and inspire effective feminist pushback. It’s actually kind of … inspiring? (That’s a word I don’t use often!) Here’s the opening:
When a history of 21st-century feminist activism is someday written, 2011 may be labeled Year Rape Broke. Sexual assault and harassment have, of course, always been key feminist concerns. But in 2011, sexual violence, exploitation, or intimidation were part of nearly every major story that fell under the heading of “women’s issues”–and the activism against it has been particularly widespread, focused and effective.
As we enter this renaissance of sexual assault awareness, it’s worth considering the ways in which new media has informed it–and, indeed, perhaps even made it possible. …
You can read the rest on the In These Times website.
Full disclosure: I worked at ITT for a couple of years in the 90s (yes, I’m old), and Sady says some nice things about Man Boobz in the piece.
@Zhinxi
Is goofus and gallant a reference to Arrested Development or is there an actual tale or parable about these characters?
@Holly Pervocracy
Time for more quotes because you cannot stop.
Schabouth Hag. 6b: “Jews may swear falsely by use of subterfuge wording.
Is that what you’re doing now, using subterfuge wording. It seems you follow this law quite well.

Can you stop?
goofus and gallant were actually a very long running “bad guy does this , good guy does this” strip for children in the magazine HIGHLIGHTS (probably still in it). Hence the Arrested Development reference. And my use of it to sum up Shammai and Hillel… Who realy kinda are the talmudic version 😉 .
http://www.dialbforblog.com/archives/476/
And once you are familiar with them, you can read the SINGLE GREATEST WORK OF SLASH FICTION EVER FUCKING WRITTEN –
http://peverel.random.info/goofusgallant.txt
Shadow: Goofus and Gallant are two characters from Highlights for Kids magazine. Goofus does something wrong (sets the table wrong, stays up late); Gallant does something good (sets the table correctly, goes to bed when told).
Agree/disagree/continue to ignore?
To be honest, I take issue with a lot of things Jesus is quoted as saying in the Gospels.
Mostly the idea from the Beatitudes that thinking a thing (lust, anger, etc) is the same as performing an action. As someone with rather severe OCD, I’ve had my fair share of abhorrent thoughts. Believe me, I wish I could control what goes on in my head but I can’t. I’ve tried endlessly. I’m punished myself. I’ve made myself absolutely miserable. The thoughts were still there. They didn’t stop.
It only started getting better when I eased up on myself a bit and tried to just let the thoughts be. Honestly, my behaviour is still largely based around trying to stop myself from thinking inappropriate things, but I don’t let it ruin my day when it does inevitably happen.
WHAT IS TALMUD? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE QUOTING? WHAT IS IT?
Can you stop?
Gosh, I hope not. This is fucking hilarious.
Wait a second. NWO, are you quoting me all this stuff about “your religion says to do terrible things!” because you think being told to love your enemy is a terrible thing?
Is this your way of saying “see, neither of us follows our religious texts really to the letter!”?
Because I could almost understand that. Is that what you’re trying to garble out?
@Holly Pervocracy
” Zohar 1,160a: “Jews must always try to deceive Christians.”
Are you trying to decieve me using subterfuge wording? You follow these laws quite well.

Can you stop?
The question is simple, Holly. Can you stop?
Holly – That’s really the only sense I can make of it.
NWO – WHAT IS TALMUD? WHAT ARE YOU QUOTING? WHAT IS ADL? WHAT IS JDL? WHAT IS PROTEIN? WHY AM I PRETENDING TO BE A LIBERTARIAN?
Okay, NWO, I disagree with deceiving Christians. I believe lying is wrong. I disagree with that part of my culture (if that’s what you think it is).
Do you agree or disagree with this part of your culture?
Holiday plans ftw!
My partner and I plan to go to a local Catholic mass (her mother asked her to do so). I’m a pagan, so let’s hope NWOs God doesn’t smite the church.
Then off for a nice Red Lobster dinner (I believe we may even have coupons from my mum!), and then a second viewing of SHERLOCK 2. (drools in anticipation and not even at the thought of dinner).
Then fix a nice dinner on the 25th (ham!), lie around petting the cats and dogs, and burping, and NOTWORKING.
Quiet, peaceful, and restorative (it was a helluva semester).
@ Zhinxi & Ozymandius
Thanks guys. Right after typing up the post I had the “D’oh!” realisation that I’m on my laptop with a big ass Google search bar on my browser loll
The question is NWO, are they even a little bit bothered by you?
NWO, that “quote” from the Zohar, which is NOT part of the TALMUD, and which does not have chaptering and numbers… LITERALLY DOES NOT EXIST.
…………………………..
9. Zohar 1, 160a and Hilkoth Akum are not part of Talmud. There is no such reference as Zohar 1, 160a. (Zohar references don’t have letters in them, like Talmud references do.) I could find no passage in Zohar about deceiving Christians. In fact, the Zohar considered any deceit (no matter to whom it was directed) to be wrong. Maimonides (not the Talmud) wrote varous Hilkot, but none is named Hilkot Akum.

Also that guy would be a christian, there.
@MRAL
“Haha. If that was my Christmas I’d totally like the season more. Maybe when I’m older?”
Yeah, one of the nice parts about getting older is that you start getting to define holidays as you like them instead of being stuck with other people’s stuff. It wasn’t until I moved out that the whole thing stopped being a family ordeal and started being about making cookies with friends.
NWO, I need to know a fucklot about Judaism and it’s interplay with Christianity, even though Judaism isn’t my particular focus because I am going to actually hopefully teach about medieval religion and law someday. That means even though I am not a Jew, I would say I know a little about this Talmud thing, and how you’re making an ass of yourself.
So I ask you, WHAT IS TALMUD?
@Holly Pervocracy
And thus we will continue.
” Sanhedrin 105ab: “Jesus fornicated with his jackass.
Since you enjoy using deciet and subterfuge wording by pulling quotes as per Jewish law. You must also believe Jesus fornicates with an ass. It is your duty to decieve after all by saying you believe in a quote. Since it’s your mostly holy of laws to decieve me with subterfuge wording and lies and deceit you have fulfilled your heritage.

I think this stuff actually gets to him. It’s getting his blood pressure up.
Unfortunately, I think it’s getting his blood pressure up to the point where he isn’t reading the words in our comments, but just scans them as “HATE HATE HATE.”
It’s a bit frustrating to try to communicate with someone in that state.
WOOHOO, NWO! OVER HERE!
I’VE BEEN SAYING ALL KINDS OF BLASPHEMOUS SHIT! LIKE THAT JESUS SAYS TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AND STUFF!
EVEN WORSE, I’VE MADE JOKES ABOUT CHRISTIANITY. I’VE CRITICIZED SOME ASPECTS OF ITS MORAL SYSTEM LIKE THOSE SPEAR BRINGS UP. I’VE WRITTEN JESUS/JOHN SLASH FIC (IT WAS A MEDITATION ON JESUS BEING TORN BETWEEN HIS HUMAN AND DIVINE NATURES, SYMBOLIZED BY EROS AND AGAPE. THERE WAS A LOT OF ANGST).
SO I THINK YOU SHOULD INSULT ATHEISTS NOW. JUST TO BE FAIR.
I do not believe Jesus fornicated with his ass. Disagree.
Do you agree or disagree?
Why do you find this a “gotcha” question?
It should be the easiest question on Earth for a Christian to answer.
@Holly Pervocracy
All I ask is that you stop pulling quotes otherwise I will as well. Can you stop?
@Holly Pervocracy
And thus we will continue…
nwo-
CONTINUE FROM WHAT. WHAT IS TALMUD? WHAT IS YOU QUOTING? TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK IT IS!!
