So you may have seen the story yesterday about the University of Vermont fraternity that was suspended for sending out a charming little survey that allegedly asked, among other things, “If you could rape someone, who would it be?” (FWIW, the frat now says it was the work of an individual frat member, not the chapter.)
Reading about this incident, I’m guessing that you probably didn’t ask yourself: “I wonder how the guys at the False Rape Society will use this news to push their own agenda?” Heck, I didn’t even think to ask myself that question. But while doing the rounds of the MRA blogs I’ve discovered the answer to that question, and here it is: FRS head honcho Pierce Harlan described the survey as “perhaps a poke at feminism’s fascination with rape,” then denounced it as “indefensible,” then ranted about the evils of false rape accusations. I guess that isn’t really shocking at all.
First, Harlan offered this take on the “who would you rape” question:
I assume the survey was sick humor, a crude satire of the fratboy culture, and perhaps a poke at feminism’s fascination with rape.
Yes, because any time men make rape jokes it’s probably because, you know, feminism, and its wacky obsession with rape.
Then Harlan went on to suggest that rape was no laughing matter – especially when it comes to rape that doesn’t happen:
Whatever it was intended to be, ultimately it is indefensible, because trivializing the word “rape” is no laughing matter, whether it’s a joke about the rape of male prisoners, or the fantasy “rape” of women, or a false rape claim intended to get a guy in, or a woman out of, trouble.
Well, that was quick. Let’s not talk about the trivialization of real rape. Let’s talk about the epidemic of “false rape accusations” that Harlan has convinced himself is the real problem here.
With nary a pause, Harlan moved on to complain about hypothetical feminists making a big deal out of this survey instead of joining him on his crusade:
There most certainly will be an outcry in the feminist blogosphere over this isolated incident
This what incident?
and it will be cited as proof positive to support the myth that ours is a “rape culture.”
Yeah, I wonder why casual jokes about rape would possibly be considered as part of “rape culture.”
A “rape culture,” of course, not only would tolerate but would condone such a puerile survey. Our society does neither. The only “rape” jokes our society condones concerns prison rape — and that’s because society actually encourages prison rape as a sort of “added bonus” punishment for any hapless male who lands in prison. It is ironic that actual prison rape does not garner the outrage that this this sick fratboy humor is generating. Go figure.
This from a guy who doesn’t seem to have ever even bothered to mention the leading anti-prison rape organization, Just Detention, on his web site. (See here for more on the issue on Man Boobz.) Though he does offer three links on his main page to information about the statute of limitation for rape charges, in case anyone reading is worried about getting caught being falsely accused for something they did didn’t do a long time ago.
Meanwhile,rape jokes — and not just prison rape jokes — are everywhere. Harlan, I assume you are at least somewhat familiar with a little site called Reddit, where people not only laugh at rape jokes – they laugh at actual rape!
Meanwhile, in the comments on Harlan’s article, some False Rape Society readers don’t even bother to pretend that the “rape survey” bothers them. According to the commenter called “bad,”
We should be celebrating young men who stand up against misandry. We should be celebrating the frat that said “no means yes” and we should be celebrating the frat that created this survey, if it’s a real story.
An anonymous commenter takes it a step further:
I do not condemn this action,
in fact, I wish I’d thought of it.
It is a brilliant and very appropriate response to the way young men are being treated by college campuses.
When the answer to “who would you like to treat like a rapist” is “all college men”, I think that asking them who they’d like to rape is more than fair.
But it is Harlan’s response to these comments that is the most revealing:
By the way, I read the reaction of Bad and others as a natural backlash … against the unconscionable PC culture of misandry on campus. I happen to disagree with those who suggest this was acceptable, but their remarks should not be construed as evidence that we live in a “rape culture.” Like Steve, I read their comments more as an affirmation that we live in a false rape culture–a culture that more and more men are finding intolerable.
I, on the other hand, doubt that these young men have the first clue about misandry, feminism, or how colleges run roughshod over the rights of young men. I am always amazed when we hear from falsely accused people who “had not idea this goes on.” My guess is they were just being being “funny.” I would, frankly, love to find out I am wrong, and that not only would they never call for a woman to be actually raped, but that this was a protest against the pendulum swinging too far. In that case, I am still not sure I could find it acceptable but it would initiate an entirely different dialogue.
So the survey is “indefensible,” yet a totally understandable reaction to, and protest against, an “unconscionable PC culture of misandry.”
Got it.
EDITED TO ADD: Harlan has written a response, of sorts, to this post. It is a bit — what’s the word I’m looking for here? — zany.
A comment on his response:
“Tim said…
The only thing more evil than this ghoul are the creepy women who comment on his stupid site. Remind me of the women who followed Dracula around.”
The women who what? So, not only are FRA such a common thing, but Dracula was (is?) real and women actually followed him around… That’s awesome.
Careful, Arks, we’ll make you a thread in the forum for stuff like this! “Lesbian separatism is just a plot to reinforce straight women’s hypergamy” priceless!
How many women do you think are in the US, for example? A couple million aren’t enough for ya?
As an alumna of a university current going through a scandal that was swept under the rug 8 years ago because it was a championship season, and the obscene amounts of money at stake, I can’t agree enough.
Wasn’t Testiclez one the hero of one of Shakespeare’s lesser/unknown plays. “Testicles and the Sack of Rome”?
:)XD:)
@Molly: there are roughly equal numbers of men and women and we still live in a pareto principle nightmare. Remember that “penes” have inherently less value than wombs, so given an equal number of both we will always end up with the harem system.
So yes odds are already stacked against men, sexually speaking, and you clam divers are just rubbing salt in the wounds.
Ok, now I am sure you are just trolling. Clam divers?
I have to say I read “clam divers” literally and for a minute wondered if Arks thought we all made our living like this.
Also, a “harem system”? Get out of town.
Clam divers and lady gravy. Arks is on a (t)roll.
@CassandraSays
“It’s a classic case of older kids bullying younger kids, and it is sexualized, but what’s happening there isn’t what he’s seeing, and the idea that the girls, I dunno, decided to dress sexy that day just in case they might have the opportunity to sexually humiliate a grade school boy? Is just bizarre.”
Oh, it’s sexualized now because you say so? I’m a perv when I say that, but you’re altruistic and pure. They didn’t decide to dress sexy that day, they dress like that everyday. Even a father, if he’s allowed or to, has any contact with his daughters can’t tell them how to dress/act lest he be accused of trying to own their sexuality. They have their beloved sexual agency.
————-
“And it’s an ongoing theme with him, this idea that women and even little girls derive some sort of malicious pleasure out of giving men erections and then denying them sex.”
Boys and girls normally associate and bond with their own gender at that age, it’s a nature thing and has nothing to do with socialization. Since that is the case, why didn’t they do that to another girl with whom they would naturally associate and have greater access? The only answer for going out of their way in finding a boy is sexual humiliation. They took great pleasure in it as the video clearly shows.
————
@Xanthe
“If he knows they are false and raises them for that purpose he is a hateful and despicable misanthrope.”
The video clearly shows these girls pleasure in sexual degradation. The only falseness is your denial and the hatred is your’s because of your denial.
————
“On the other hand, if he isn’t faking then he is an amoral sociopath who is under the delusion that he is a moral person because of his superficially reasoned religious views.”
You deny these girls deliberately choose a boy to sexually humiliate when at that age their access to boys is minimal. You have no morality as long as you deny these girls singled out a boy because of his gender and took great pleasure in his sexual degradation.
————-
“The expectation was that all the ebil feminists would defend the girls in the video, because all ebil feminists are misandrists and girls can do no wrong evah!!!1!”
You have. You deny they did specifically to sexually tease, frustrate, humiliate and degrade him for being born male. That’s defending.

@SaruGoku
“So there you go again, making shit up.”
They weren’t punished because of their gender and they immensely enjoyed the humiliation of a boy. What did I make up?
————
“The girls deserve to be punished and the fact that they haven’t been is due to the boy’s mother deciding not to charge them, not some kind of feminist conspiracy.”
There’s no conspiracy. Just because you call any fact your ideology disagree’s with a conspiracy doesn’t make it go away. The young lad merely got his daily dose of misandry in a personal way. He’ll experience more to a hopefully lesser extent every day from his schools, State and MSM. I’m sure he’ll be quite sympathetic to all the propaganda posters in his school about how gilrs are victims and boys are oppressors. Maybe the poster of a young boy wearing the “awaiting instructions” from girls, hoodie.

@ithiliana
“Well, NWO, I await ur insights with breathless impatience.”
I went to your wiki-link on hazing, and in every instance of example the little “citation needed” was listed. Apparently, even wiki, which’ll print majority opinion as if it’s fact, can’t even find enough opinions. I guess I’ll have to take your word as a woman on what truth is.
Also, if we do live in a “harem system”, how come the word has come to mean “one man, many women?” Where are all the gorgeous men wearing nothing but some silk, dammit?
NWO, isn’t it a bit early for your nonsense?
NWO: Oh, it’s sexualized now because you say so? I’m a perv when I say that, but you’re altruistic and pure.
No dude. It’s sexualised. The way you sexualised is why you are a perv. Well, no, you chose to sexualise it by saying, “ooh that 12 year old is dressed all hot and sexy!” because you are a perv… that you shared this salient detail with is how we know it.
“They didn’t decide to dress sexy that day, they dress like that everyday.”
I think I’ve figured out NWOslave’s reasoning here. NWOslave is saying that the poor guy in the video was sexually harassed *just because of the clothes the women were wearing*. The fact that we’re saying that it’s harassment because the women actually tore the man’s clothes OFF means were *denying* that it’s harassment!
NWOslave: How about “IT’S HARASSMENT BECAUSE THEY RIPPED THAT GUY’S CLOTHES OFF WITHOUT HIS CONSENT?”
I’m also not sure how NWOslave could get that good a look at the clothes the women were wearing during such a short and blurry segment of video, but okay. o.o
It’s easy, Molly, he sees women of any age dressed in any manner, and thinks “slut.”
You can choose not to believe me if you want. I just don’t see how you folks can live in a world where the De Beers group manipulates the world diamond supply, and yet it’s such an impossible stretch to think that maybe women have been doing the same with vaginas.
@Pecunium

You’re the one who advocates that 12 year old girl can act and dress anyway she wants. I wonder why?
Blood vaginas!! Ok, I really did laugh at that one.
NWO: That was a general google search to MULTIPLE sources on hazing.
NOT just wikipedia.
BUt if you’d rather, here, a link on hazing that leads only to .edu sites:
http://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ie=UTF-8&ion=1&nord=1#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&nord=1&site=webhp&source=hp&q=fraternity%20hazing%20site%3Aedu&pbx=1&oq=&aq=&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&fp=2f0b188327e19041&ion=1&ion=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=2f0b188327e19041&ion=1&biw=1280&bih=939
And answer my question: do you condemn MALE fraternity members for violent/abusive hazing of initiates or do you only want to blame girls?
And wtf “access to boys is limited” at that age: school? neighborhood? WTF does “limited access” even mean? Do you think they’re all in same sex schools?
Yes, Arks, the Pussy Cartel has quarterly meetings and sets the price. I’d show you the prospectus, but the first rule of Pussy Cartel is no talking about Pussy Cartel. You understand.
Are we back to the Cock Blockade meme?
ARKS: I just don’t see how you folks can live in a world where the De Beers group manipulates the world diamond supply, and yet it’s such an impossible stretch to think that maybe women have been doing the same with vaginas.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
*picks self up off floor weak with laughing*
First off, I totally fucking boycott/oppose diamonds (not that it makes a fuckton of difference because who could afford them anyway), and SECOND: the women of the world are NOT a corporate entity manipulating access to OUR bodies. The way you keep up the reductive shit is getting to be a pain in another body part.
@hellkell: shhhhhhhhhhhhh, you’re revealing classified info!
I’m sorry, after clam divers, nothing else Arks says will be taken seriously.
I know, I just didn’t want the poor dear to think his conspiracy theories were all for naught.
@Molly Ren
“IT’S HARASSMENT BECAUSE THEY RIPPED THAT GUY’S CLOTHES OFF WITHOUT HIS CONSENT?”
Calm down, the girls won’t be punished. They probably shed tears, oh gasp! Right now they’re most likely at the mall giggling at all the boys who are gawking at them in their teeny bikini’s. Hope none of those boys looks to long and breaks the 6 second rule, they might get in trouble for sexual harrassment.
The pedestal only has a few cracks. Just a touch up’ll do. The MSM will just bang out a zillion stories about bad men and pure, brilliant and morally superior women to alleviate any of your concerns.
