Good news, everyone! The good folks on the RedditorOfTheDay subreddit picked our friend AnnArchist to be Redditor of the Day yesterday. He filled out a little questionnaire for the RedditorOfTheDay folks listing all sorts of fun facts about himself.
In addition to moderating the Men’s Rights subreddit and posting hilarious videos of women getting beaten up to the beatingwomen subreddit, AnnArchist (who is a dude, despite the name) also enjoys: Skyrim, bass fishing, sports talk radio, chicken tacos, and football!
His biggest pet peeve:
People who want to interfere with other people’s happiness.
His biggest worry about Reddit?
I just hope the community doesn’t grow so quickly that we lose the quality debate and discussion that has kept many of the users around reddit for a long time.
Over on ShitRedditSays, fxexular has helpfully catalogued some of AnnArchist’s contribution to the “quality debate and discussion.” Like his considered opinion on one female judge:
I hope someone kills her.
And his opinion of an alleged false rape accuser:
I hope she was harassed. Fuck I hope her house was firebombed. Lets be clear, I really will applaud anyone who does anything to her, be it slash her tires or slash her throat.
You can find even more of these charming nuggets in my post about him here.
In his answers to the RedditorOfTheDay questionnaire, AnnArchist reveals himself to be a truly sensitive soul. Here, he shares a painful moment from his past:
When I was a senior in HS and when my friend and I saw … the plane fly into the twin towers our first reaction was laughter rather than OMG thats a tragedy. Yea, we’re fucked up. I TPed my High School that night. I’m a horrible person.
Oh, and did I mention that he’s the creator, sole moderator, and basically the only contributor to the NSFW4 subreddit, devoted to posting pictures and videos too horrific and offensive to post anywhere else on Reddit?
Godspeed, AnnArchist! Thank you for making the world a better place!
NOTE: This post is almost entirely made up of sarcasm.
I’ve watched a few scenes of the movie on youtube and read the Roger Ebert interview. I don’t feel as though I have to concern myself with that misandrist garbage any longer.
MRAs just bastardize everything don’t they? Fight Club, The Matrix… everything can be interpreted as “it’s all the bitchez fault!!!11” I really wish we could designate an island for them and their ladybots, then everyone would be happy.
@bionicmommy
oh man, bullshitting an essay on a book you didn’t read. the great high school pasttime. my favorite is the time i convinced my teacher at the last second that our in-class essay on their eyes were watching god should be open book.
Kids at my high school would skip the assigned reading and just read the Sparknotes and then complain about how the book sucked. MRAL, you didn’t grow up in Seattle, did you?
I didn’t say Bateman was an MRA, only that he wasn’t a feminist symbol of Evil Men in the book.
Profound and thought-provoking isn’t what comes to mind when I read Ellis, MRAL. But you probably cribbed that from the synopsis, right? AP was a slog to get through, and I can’t believe I went back for more with Imperial Bedrooms. What a clusterfuck THAT book was.
Aaaaaaand you didn’t even read it. You are a laugh riot, son.
Fight Club is probably Palanuik’s best book.
Good, then you don’t expect us to read your whole damn posts.
Don’t worry Holly, he’s probably only killing a mangina (if Patrick Bateman is an MRA hero and his victim admitted to being a loser then he must be) And we know manginas aren’t considered men to MRAs so it doesn’t matter what happens to them!
Ok, I don’t believe actually reading the whole damn book is necessary to understand what the author was trying to say.
FYI, I didn’t just read the synopsis, I read the section on themes and motifs too. They’re quite interesting.
-That’s different from rhapsodizing on how it’s the author’s best work, etc. Just coming clean and saying “having not read the book, from what I understand of it’s themes…”
If you’d actually worked your way through a Cliff’s Notes, how learned would you consider yourself, I wonder? Like, maybe you could act like you read THREE MORE books, just because you ALMOST read a whole one? 😉
Whoo, boy, WERK that BU edumacation!
You know the sad thing? He still is not as bad as Brandon.
And MRAL, I have read the book, you really really need to read it because while there are some actual points being made they are drowned out by the graphic descriptions of rats.
HAHAHAHAHAHA OH DEAR HAHAHAHA
I was already giggling at the presumption that not reading any of the book is “not reading the whole damn book,” and then you pulled the rug out of me with that proud assertion that you read the whole Wikipedia article! Not just the top part!
And I have a high IQ.
Good point. Since I read enough of the Cliff’s Notes to write a Pride and Prejudice book review, I now declare myself to have also read War and Peace, A Tale of Two Cities, and Walden.
@Sharculese, the students who convinced teachers to make tests open book or delay deadlines on homework were my heroes back in high school. They saved my ass many times.
Hahahahaha, fail. Seriously, it’s not that hard to read a book before opening your flap about it.
I remember when American Psycho was being passed around in images on 4chan*. You had to rename the images in the thread to rar, unzip them, and there’s your ebook.
EVEN DROOLING CP COLLECTORS CAN READ A GODDAMNED BOOK.
* I don’t post there anymore, I’ve grown up (a bit) and the CAPTCHA’s a pain in the ass.
I can understand people having an issue with Fight Club. It happens to have as fandom the very people the movie is critiquing. It’s a bit like the fact that American History X is adored unironically by racist skinheads (I think they must tune out their brain in-between the parts with the curb stomp scene and the parts where the racists spout racist garbage or sing racist songs).
MRAL, by the way, we’re not making fun of you for not reading the book. That in itself doesn’t mean you’re dumb or uneducated. Nobody’s read every book, and it’s hardly a Great American Classic.
We’re making fun of you for saying you did, then making terrible attempts to cover it with “well I basically read it!” bravado.
It’s okay to just say “I didn’t read that, but I read a summary, and… [mangina wymyn etc.]”
Holly – To be fair, the homeless man doesn’t die in that scene. While Bateman does kill males in horrifying ways, he tends to reserve the worst he’s got for women. I thought I hated rats before I read AP.
Know what’s extra funny about MRAL having only read the Wikipedia entry? There is no section on themes and motifs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Psycho
Oh dear God, MRAL, keep digging, you haven’t watched the movie either?
Maybe you need to not have so many opinions about this.
(Also, he’s not a symbol of Evil Men! He’s a symbol of Evil Rich People! Gosh.)
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MisaimedFandom
It’s not like the entire movie deals specifically with feminist issues either. The class/capitalism points still come up too. Homeless man scene, anyone?
Does it still count as “Misaimed Fandom” if I mostly just deliriously yaoifangirled through all of Fight Club but I also understood that stealing human fat and trying to blow up buildings is wrong? 😀
And I forgot to add: even a misogynist reading of American Psycho is reaching when it ascribes Batemen’s motivations to feminism, of all things. As far as I remember, social movements are not something that Patrick Bateman really gives many shits about, and I don’t think he mentions it except, perhaps, in passing.
Patrick Bateman doesn’t care about anything outside of his appearance, sex, clothes, buying expensive shit, and killing people.
And drugs. I forgot drugs.
I have serious theories about Fight Club as a critique of modern American masculinity, but I will save it, because no one else cares. I will say that Marla Singer is, in my opinion, one of the most feminist characters in a non-Bechdel-passing movie ever. It’s very cleverly written to show that even though the Narrator is a sexist fuckhead who objectifies her as a means of expressing his homoerotic love for Tyler Durden, she is still a person! Who has agency! And problems of her own that the Narrator has nothing to do with!
One of my friends theorizes that Marla has BPD, which I find plausible.
Re: Idiocracy. People are not getting dumber. Let me repeat that in big letters:
PEOPLE ARE NOT GETTING DUMBER.
PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY GETTING SMARTER.
It is called the Flynn effect. Some estimates suggest that the average US IQ may have risen as many as twenty points since 1930. There’s a couple of reasons why. There are some confounding variables– for instance, people are probably more familiar with taking standardized tests, and IQ tests have gotten less culturally biased (although they still are, of course). Better childhood nutrition is a biggie– starvation and nutritional deficiencies tend to make people less intelligent– as is better treatment of childhood diseases.
My favorite theory, of course, is the one where increased technological complexity has required people to engage with far more information and live in a far more enriched environment than before, which caused corresponding increases in IQ. Unfortunately, the data appears to be against this so far, as the Flynn effect has stopped in recent years, which is consistent with the theory that it was all the nutrition and the infectious diseases and shit.
