So yesterday I quoted some random Spearheader who described women (well, white women in particular) as “complete parasitical whores roaming the landscape spreading VD like Johnny Appleseed and fucking men over.”
One reader wondered if Mr. Appleseed really went about spreading VD. So I did a little research, and it turns out that it is exceedingly unlikely that Mr. Appleseed – who actually was a real person — spread anything other than the magic of apples. And his Swedenborgian beliefs.
Why? Because Mr. Appleseed – real name John Chapman – was what these days we might call a Man Going His Own Way. Seems he didn’t have much truck with the ladies, according to one contemporary account quoted in his Wikipedia entry:
On one occasion Miss PRICE’s mother asked Johnny if he would not be a happier man, if he were settled in a home of his own, and had a family to love him. He opened his eyes very wide–they were remarkably keen, penetrating grey eyes, almost black–and replied that all women were not what they professed to be; that some of them were deceivers; and a man might not marry the amiable woman that he thought he was getting, after all.
So what led poor Mr. Appleseed to these dire thoughts about women? Apparently the underage girl he hoped to some day get with was more into dudes who weren’t him:
Now we had always heard that Johnny had loved once upon a time, and that his lady love had proven false to him. Then he said one time he saw a poor, friendless little girl, who had no one to care for her, and sent her to school, and meant to bring her up to suit himself, and when she was old enough he intended to marry her. He clothed her and watched over her; but when she was fifteen years old, he called to see her once unexpectedly, and found her sitting beside a young man, with her hand in his, listening to his silly twaddle.
That ungrateful little strumpet!
I peeped over at Johnny while he was telling this, and, young as I was, I saw his eyes grow dark as violets, and the pupils enlarge, and his voice rise up in denunciation, while his nostrils dilated and his thin lips worked with emotion. How angry he grew! He thought the girl was basely ungrateful. After that time she was no protegé of his.
But Appleseed, despite giving up on women in the real world, held out hope for the afterlife – explaining to others that he expected to have two spirit wives all his own after he died. Which I guess is the 19th century equivalent of the MGTOWers today who fantasize about the sexy robot ladies who will eventually, it is hoped, make actual human females – with their troubling “thoughts” and “needs” and “desires” of their own – obsolete.
Mr. Appleseed’s quest to remain alone was probably also helped by the fact that – if the illustration I found on Wikipedia is any indication – he looked a bit like Dale Gribble from King of the Hill. Only much, much sloppier, with long hair. Oh, and instead of wearing a baseball cap, he wore “a tin utensil which answered both as a cap and a mush pot.”
So, yeah, a creepy weirdo who hates women — definitely an MGTOWer all the way.
Oh, except that he actually did something with his life — you know, helping spread apple trees to a big portion of the midwest — instead of spending all his time going on about how all women are whores.
Speaking of participants and lurkers, where the hell did the troll who started all this go? He did all that fussing and when we finally deliver up what he wanted in a way the rest of us could get into, he disappears. I think that’s reason enough to ban his petulant ass next time he tries to derail a thread with Holocaust denial. Or any version of the Let’s All Look At Me Troll Show.

That might be something that’s culture/country specific? Here in Quebec I’ve met countless Maoists, one Castrist, never a Stalinist. I’ve heard there’s a decent Trotskyist following in the UK (the SWP?). And that’s it.
Hitler has some fans (we butt heads every so often), though Le Pen has a better cachet and some of our homegrown fascists who have ties to the Quebec independance movements are more beloved. IMO Hitler gets most of the hatred because while Stalin/Trotsky and co. are supposed to be internationalists (thus loony communists from everywhere may love them), fascism is country-specific (which means that every country that’s not Germany will be ambivalent about him).

Yeah, I had forgotten about Georgian-Russian issues because my sympathies – and therefore my reading – tends towards Ukraine and a few other places. It’s hard to keep track of everything when you’re looking at the big picture, but at the same time focusing on any one area over another means you miss some important things. I think that’s why I like Russian, Slavic and Soviet history so much – it’s such a clusterfuck.
Any recommendations on reading? Nothing too scholarly – The Gulag Archipelago is about as serious as I want to read. I am not a professional historian. The topics I am most currently interested in are the Soviet space program and the Americans and other Westerners who went to participate in the Great Experiment in the 30s and never came back.
Actually the more I think about it the more interesting it is to me that I’ve never met a Stalinist. I’ve met just about every other flavor of communist, but in more than 20 years of being actively interested in communism, not a single Stalinist. So I’m very curious about where these respectable circles in which Stalinism is supposedly OK are.

I reolied that gold, by both limiting the amount of money (and credit) in circulation, and by forbidding the action of State counterfeiting, acted very strongly as a force for peace, disarmament, and open commerce, and very strongly AGAINST war! The only way a modern State could be funded with a functioning 100% gold standard (NOT a “mixed” standard such as XIX th century America where banks were not punished for fraud and counterfeiting when they treated the assets of creditors and depositors as their own (fraudulently) and issued “banknotes” as money, which were subsequently redeemed below par, since there was NO GOLD to redeem them when there was the inevitable “bank run”. cf. our hero’s books

Lighten up!! I watch–and reply to–other blogs and websites than manboobz.com–LOTS of them! I favor ones whom I tend to agree with replies sooner than ones like this, where firstly, everything that I say is apt to be misunderstood, even when I am trying to be friendly or agreeable, and secondly, I don’t agree with you people all that often anyhow. There is nothing cowardly about this, just common sense! I ‘ll also flat out tell you that most of the other websites and blogs–which you people opined were “right wing moonbattery”–whom I enjoy are MUCH more intelligent than manboobz–or related feminist websites, and hence more enjoyable reading!
I replied to your opinion about gold vs. paper a few days ago, but you seem to have missed it. I just added another reply, but now I am going to another–and friendlier site–not because I am “cowardly”, but because I have better things to do, and it is far likelier there that I will be understood when I write there in plain English than here! I am, for example, going to be reluctant to reply to Johnson and Long’s piece on libertarianism and feminism that you introduced me to, because I do HATE feminism, and the evidence that it and libertarianism, which I have great regard for, may well have common points and perhaps even origins requires some more thought on my part! I don’t want to be attacking my own side! Sometimes I get overly excitable when I get involved in something and I write carelessly. I want there to be more libertarians in the world, and if Long, et al. can reach out effectively, I certainly don’t want to write something that works at cross purposes with that! You too, I think, want libertarianism to be more popular on manboobz and similar blogs, and you wouldn’t wan’t me to inadvertantly write something damaging to its prospects of leftist acceptance!

You gave me a response about gold vs. fiat state money, and how it may limit expansion in wartime, but that wasn’t my point. My point was the imperialism, slavery, and exploitation involved in gold mining. Even if it were the best “state money” (which isn’t saying much – I think we need to focus on alternative currencies, but no matter…) the issues of it’s production, and how it breaks and bloodies the backs of our fellow human beings are still a major libertarian ethical issue, that shouldn’t be swept under the rug.
In fact, the very tendency to limit a gold-backed state’s warmongering has a tendency to DRIVE the search for more!
