Truly, the most heart-wrenching thing about rape is that those courageous souls who make jokes about it are sometimes made to feel a little bad about it on the internet.

Have you ever listened to a Chris Rock routine? He had an amazing one that clearly lays out the difference between this shit, actually. Able white cis hetero dudes of status still hold the amazingly disproportionate amount of power; they advantage those like them subconsciously and consciously, as can be witnessed by literally dozens of studies. It leaks into societal narratives, and is generally internalized by *everyone*, not just the dudes with power.
Onto the Chris Rock Routine;t he difference between black people, who generally have nothing, mocking white people, who hold the majority of the power, is that at the end of the day, that white dude still has a shot at getting a loan. He has a better chance, all else being equal, of being hired over a black dude, a woman, etc. White people already have this shit; if they mock black dudes, that’s just being mean. It might be funny to them, but it’s a bully’s humor, not a jester’s.

That’s telling people who don’t like the joke (for whatever reason) that they need to just shut the fuck up and let the, “funny” happen.
This is in a forum that’s got it’s jock-straps in a twist because Sharon Osborne made a joke they not only found unfunny, but people they disapprove are alleged to have laughed at it.
When it gets brought up, the feminists (accused of being all over that shit) say, “That some fucked up shit.”

Basic civility isn’t the same as treating every person with kid gloves.
Hell, basic civility includes not taking offense when someone says they dislike ‘x’ type of joke.
Basic civility would be treating people as if they were capable of dealing with frank, forthright, and; yes sometimes, foul-mouthed, expressions of one’s personal opinions.
It’s not as if one needs to be scatological, nor even crude to make a cutting remark. Please feel free to continue sharing your honest opinions. I, for one, will not think any less of you.

The logical end-point of complaining about rape jokes is to outlaw all jokes unless the teller is a black lesbian paraplegic deaf blind mute morbidly obese anorexic rape survivor Jewish victim of Bernie Madoff with Tourettes Syndrome.

You’re kind of a moron, aren’t you? No, because a huge number of very funny jokes don’t require you to mock people who are downtrodden. Sarah Silverman’s entire act is constructed on mocking the powerful and dismantling -isms, for instance.

Also, I don’t think anyone wants to outlaw rape jokes – we just don’t think rape joke tellers deserve sympathy because people call them out on being insensitive assholes.

I’ve been really shaken up about this since yesterday. A guy at an improv comedy festival told a (presumably) true story about how he raped a woman. And the audience’s reaction was … mostly … to laugh about it.
It makes my stomach turn. Watch the video. Rape jokes play a HUGE role in supporting an atmosphere that allowed a rapist to treat his actual rape of a real person as a fucking joke.
