I found this illustrating a typically incoherent rant about “The Aphrodisiac of the False Rape Claim” on What Men Are Saying About Women, the blog of the infamous MRA double period. Whoever made it needs to stop making Demotivational posters because he doesn’t understand how these posters are supposed to work. Or how to communicate a coherent message to other human beings using language.
That’s unnecessary. But if you’re really interested in public service announcements, a t-shirt with the words “I am probably a rapist” would suffice.
Allow me to bust out the trusty NWOTranslator™: “Crap! I didn’t think those numbers actually existed, and now I have NO IDEA what to say! I still don’t believe you, because I’m constitutionally incapable of admitting error and learning, but I have no numbers to justify my refusal to believe you, so I’m just going to be ambiguously sarcastic.”
I’m going to guess, if NWO has any social life at all, that he probably knows more than 1-in-8 rapists, just as I probably know fewer than that. It’s not as though one in eight men at random is a rapist. And water seeks its own level

1 in 4 women are raped, (western world).
I’m just tryin ta do my crappy math. In this country that make about 18 million rapists at a cost of 120K a year to incarcerate them coming out to $2,160,000,000,000 per year. Hmmm, a tish over 2 trillion a year to incarcerate 12% of the men. I think it’s doable. Especially if we do away with that whole trial shmagiggy, that’d probably run another 2 trillion easy in court costs.

NWO: Nothing in that post makes any sense whatsoever. Seriously. Are you advocating not putting people who commit crimes in jail? Or only people who commit certain crimes? If so, what do you think the punishment should be for rape? Non violent drug offenses? Drunk driving?
I think NWO’s fundamental problem here (besides the usual “if feminists say the sky is blue, I disagree” problem) is the definition of “rape.”
I suspect he thinks of rape as a scenario in which a total stranger jumps out of the bushes at a totally innocent and unawares woman and physically forces her to have sex with him. And while that certainly does happen, it’s probably not so common. It’s likely that no one on the plane with him has been a party to that kind of rape.
What he doesn’t get is that most of the women who walk into the ER were raped by their friends, their brother’s friends, their boyfriends, their exes, their husbands. We have prostitutes who were raped by customers (and no, smartass, that doesn’t just mean “not paying”), and we have old ladies who were raped by their nurses. These are acts that occurred behind closed doors and between people who had some level of trust.
A guy who got mad and forced his girlfriend to have sex that once when she was giving him a hard time may not think of himself as a rapist. But that guy is very likely to be on the plane with NWO.

Not just likely precious, guaranteed. 1 out of every 8 men are rapists. If there’s 8000 men in the airport 1000 of them are rapists, no ifs, ands or buts about it. For every 8 men I interact with, reguardless of knowing them, or being related to them or not, one of them is a rapist.
Like I said, I got it down pat. Every man I know in my family, father, brothers, uncles, cousins, nephews has a 12% chance of being a rapist. When we get together, I’ll know the score.

NWO – Okay, I’m not prepared to teach basic math here, so I’ll just say:
Out of all the men in the US, 1/8th have raped someone. However, if you grab 8 men at random, it may turn out that none of them have, or 4 of them have. 1 in 8 is only what you’ll get on average.
However, this still means that there will probably be rapists on that plane and almost certainly be rapists in the terminal.
If this bothers you, good. But please be bothered by the fact that there are so many rapists out there, not by the fact that someone had the gall to tell you about it.

NWO: Sweet blessed jesus on a pogo stick, do you not have even the most basic understanding of statistics or how they are derived? (never, mind, I just answered my own question) 1 in 6 women are sexually assaulted – let’s just take that for granted, for the purposes of a hypothetical – that doesn’t mean that if you line up six random women, one of them is guaranteed to have been sexually assaulted. In that random group, all of them might have been, or none. 1 in 6 means that OUT OF THE WHOLE POPULATION, that number holds true.
You know what, I’m tired of this bullshit. From now on, in the grand Erisian tradition, if NWO posts nonsense, I will reply with something equally random. This might be fun!

No princess, that’s not how it works. If 1 in 8 men are rapists and at any point in time, say at my family get together there might be 20 men there. It will be statistically impossible for at least one of us to not be a rapist. In fact, it is extremely unlike there won’t be two rapists present. In other words, you and your fucking ilk are calling me and my family a pack of rapists. That pisses me the fuck off to no end.
And guess what? Remember how I’ve stated I would risk my life to save a woman from being raped. I now recind that offer to only the women I know. Why the fuck should I risk my safety for someone who might be exactly like the shits that reside here.

Terrible understanding of stats aside… this isn’t exactly a new concept to most women. And yet we’re constantly whinged at by MRAs for keeping this kind of odds in mind. But the “Schrodinger’s Rapist” model is more accurate than yours — you can’t know someone is a rapist until they actually rape, so even if you could find a perfectly representative group of 8 dudes there’s no knowing which has raped or will rape or anything useful or predictive like that; population statistics do not narrow down to describe a single person of that population.
