I am not a pacifist (I am peaceful, even relatively non-violent), but I am not a pacifist. I think self-defense is admirable. I think someone who refuses to take no for an answer deserves to be resisted.
It’s funny because the idea is that women are delicate little flowers who can’t defend themselves. This is not the case.
As a case in point, I am slight. I am 5’9″, and come in between 115-120 lbs. People assume that means they can push me around. See above, I am not fond of violence. I will wait a good long time before I decide that minor provocations merit physical response.
One of those requirements is actual physical threat. If someone (male, nor female, I don’t care) crosses that line, I will hand them as much of their ass as is required to put them back on the other side of it. It doesn’t happen often. For some reason people tend to be unwilling to push quite that far. The track record is, in my adult life, five. Four men, one woman (that I’ve had to lay hands on. There are a couple of men which had different resolutions, not requiring physical contact, and apart from anything which happened in combat zones/training).
In the backstory of that cartoon, he went too far. You think she was out of line? Fine. But that implies you think his not taking no for an answer is acceptable. That she was obliged to put up with it.
MRAL: You keep using the word ‘abuse,’ but I’m not quite sure you understand what it means. Fighting back against being attacked =/= abuse. Last I checked it was called self-defense. If the concept still confuses you, there’s this wonderful resource called Google, where you can find just about any information you want to know. (except, evidently, how to put my own background on my new cellphone. But that’s neither here nor there.)
No no, the texts were pretty clear on “this is more commonly observed in men/women,” and why. Often due to cultural/social reasons. I don’t think my hyper-feminist sex roles prof would have chosen texts that were blatantly biased. (I took 3 classes from her. She was great.)
Also, let’s be clear … online doesn’t mean crappy. Online schools are often attached to a brick and mortar location. A diploma mill, on the other hand …
(Just something that bugs me. Due to illness, I finished my degree online. A lot of my classes were harder than ones I currently am taking in person. Also, you really have to be careful with budgeting your time and remembering the schedule or else you’ll forget to take tests on time, and generally you weren’t allowed to take them late. Even with timed, open-book tests you wouldn’t believe how bad some people did … it’s not as easy as you’d think.)
I used to be a pacifist. Being a pacifist does not equal doing nothing and accepting bad things. There is a middle ground of nonviolent direct action, which is the default in my opinion anyway. I leave violent self defense in response to violence open, but I don’t create it as an expectation. A victim of violence who refuses to return violence is not to blame for what happens, the perpetrator is.
DSC: I don’t think pacifism requires that. I’ve been an attender at several Quaker meetings. My former fiancée is a Quaker.
I just don’t think MRAL is in a place to look at the finer points of pacifism.
