Icy windscreens are a pain. Ever had to pee on the door handle to unfreeze it?
No worries, Yohami. I really should get an avatar. I keep thinking I’m Lyn!
“I really should get an avatar. I keep thinking I’m Lyn!”
haha
Fair enough. I will say that if you aren’t interested in covering your arse and being politically correct – that’s totally your call. You can say whatever you want as long as you don’t sling insults at people or threaten them (according to David’s rules). However, I’m pretty sure you’re going to get called out on arguments which imply that the world is only populated by cis het people. Or arguments which imply that all women are like x. It’s not me trying to ‘enforce’ politically correct speech or anything – I was trying to disagree with what you were saying and implying in a respectful debate ‘taking your words seriously’ kindof way. Also, I think you’ll find a few people on this board who think that being ‘politically incorrect’ can, in some circumstances, be a jerk thing to do.
Is it cos we’re from Australia that we both have yellow thingies? Even when I post from my other computer I get a yellow patchwork thing. I’m so technically illiterate that I can’t figure out how to change it – I really wanted to make my card my avatar but couldn’t figure it out 🙁
Lyn, yeah, I can totally see that coming.
So far the whole issue is about if “all women are like x” – I think I already covered that to death?
If there is anything else on what Im saying that you disagree with, please bring it.
Lyn, if you figure it out, you can teach me 😉
Yohami, it’s not ‘politically correct’, it’s because you are speaking to a bunch of people who are not cis, het etc.
Well, you would be speaking to a bunch of people if they hadn’t all buggered off to bed or whatever 🙂
“Yohami, it’s not ‘politically correct’, it’s because you are speaking to a bunch of people who are not cis, het etc.”
which is fine – but see, first the diversion that not every woman is like that, then that not everyone is hetero, then that not everyone is… and not everyone… is a person? and… this kind of stuff makes debate irrelevant. lets just agree theres no “everyone” and be done with it.
speaking of which, “everyone” is sleeping. we should join them
goodnight
Magpie, Lyn, you can get an avatar by going to gravatar.com.
“If the cartoon pictured two brothers, there wouldnt be a joke / no cartoon.”
If the cartoon is about abusive relationships, then gender and form of relationship doesn’t matter, and the joke or message is still valid if the cartoon features two brothers.
If it’s about abusive sexual relationships, then making a cartoon about Ami’s dad dancing or being hyperbolic while being abusive to her mom would be equally funny or deliver the same message.
But you don’t think those comparisons are valid. Why not?
“From now on if I say something totally disproportionate like “men are attracted to women” I dont need to clarify Im not talking about gays / nor trying to make absolute truths from my ass, cool?”
Nope. Everyone has to say what they actually mean, no matter how long they’ve been here, or there will be misunderstandings. If you don’t want your statements to come off as absolute truths, reword them a little. It’s really easy. You only need to add one word to the sentence “men are attracted to women” – “most” or “straight.”
(or “straight/bi,” but baby steps)
summer,
“If the cartoon is about abusive relationships, then gender and form of relationship doesn’t matter, and the joke or message is still valid if the cartoon features two brothers.”
Make it about a chicken manipulating a cow and it might be funny again. Two brothers = not as funny.
“But you don’t think those comparisons are valid. Why not?”
I said her example was not funny – nothing about it not being valid.
“You only need to add one word to the sentence “men are attracted to women” – “most” or “straight.”
Other than playing the NAWALT and now the anti hetero-normative police and chasing stuff I didnt say and / or thoughts I dont have, do you disagree on any of the stuff I did say?
“Make it about a chicken manipulating a cow and it might be funny again. Two brothers = not as funny.”
What makes a woman manipulating her male partner more funny than a man manipulating his brother?
“What makes a woman manipulating her male partner more funny than a man manipulating his brother?”
Without the absurd car situation is not funny. The manipulation is not funny, but, the situation, plus the manipulation, is. Mix social criticism + absurd = humor. Mix stereotypes + absurd = humor.
To make the joke about two brothers, you would have to remove the sexual tension and change the relationship roles to something else, so it would be a different joke – unless you are catering to a incestuous gay market. I guess that market would laugh – but it would be unfunny to me.
So, do you disagree with anything I said or you just have fun by playing police? Im dying to hear your arguments if you have any.
“Without the absurd car situation is not funny.”
But no, two brothers could be having this argument about cars too. Do you think it is sexual tension that makes the cartoon funny? Where is the sexual tension?
I’m disagreeing with you right now, and I’m not even wearing my Lady Cop cosplay outfit.
summer,
You are not disagreeing, you´re just questioning everything I say = police. To disagree you have to present a counter argument.
“But no, two brothers could be having this argument about cars too.”
And you would laugh about it?
Sure, I like to ask a lot of questions, especially when I’ve been having trouble communicating with someone. I’m just trying to find out what you actually do believe before I agree or disagree with it.
No, I wouldn’t laugh at it. Because I don’t think the abusive dynamics in the cartoon are funny, and I don’t think dressing it up in a ridiculous situation makes them funny.
Now, what makes woman-abusing-her-partner funnier than man-abusing-his-brother?
summer, I already explained why its funny. If you dont find it funny, thats fine.
Okay, so you don’t think it would be funny unless it’s a sexual relationship. Would it be as funny if it were two men? Or a man demanding that a woman sell her car? You said something about stereotypes. Is the cartoon making fun of abusive behavior, or just abusive women?
Lyn/Magpie: The geometric avatars are email related, so Oz might be the reason.
YOHAMI: Disagreement doesn’t require argument. Persuasion does. You have actually been given arguements (i.e. if you don’t want the sort of confusion/criticism you have been getting for your lack of clarity, you ought to clarify in advance).
summer,
What do you think about the cartoon?
Pecunium,
What do you find unclear in what Im saying?
That you aren’t generalizing about all women.
I also understand the desire to assume that people will know you mean straight when you say men, but adding it would avoid confusion.
More to the point, when you say that disagreement requires argument, in the face of that very argument… I find it unclear what you mean by argument.
Pecunium,
If you check my last 12 comments or so you´ll see Im not generalizing about all women.
“More to the point, when you say that disagreement requires argument, in the face of that very argument… I find it unclear what you mean by argument.”
If I say a portion of the moon is white, and you disagree, all I ask is you tell me which color you see it. Stating the color you see is the argument.
