I personally don’t think this post was made in bad faith. However, given the monstrous level of contempt for fathers in our society, it perhaps was in bad taste, unintentionally. Mothers are revered as goddesses, fathers as demons. I did not laugh.

There is nothing you can read into it that you didn’t put there yourself. My dad and I are not close at the moment, but he came over and helped me with a landscaping project I’m doing for my mom. We talked and we got caught up on what each of us is up to, and I made him a caramel-fudge cake from scratch. Money is very short this year, so I’m afraid there weren’t any presents. all said, it was still a pretty good Father’s Day.

In happy news: I just made a bed for my dad in the spare room! We call and email all the time, but because he lives in Germany and I live in the US, I haven’t seen him in more than a year. I’m so excited that I’m going to spend time with my dad in the city where we lived together when I was a little kid, and I’m excited/nervous about introducing him to my boyfriend–they’re both huge tech nerds and I sincerely hope they nerd out together.
My dad is the man who gave me my sense of humor, who encouraged me to be curious about the world I live in–always ask questions, always look it up, always take it apart–and who told me, every time that I made him proud and every time that I screwed up, “No matter what, I will always love you and always be there for you.”
