Man Boobz’ first FRIDAY NIGHT OPEN THREAD DANCE PARTY is now open for business. Most threads here are pretty open, but this one will be even more so. Talk about whatever you want, link to interesting shit, link to your own blogs, go wild!
Or you can talk about this: Earlier today I was listening to the song Dusseldorf, by La Dusseldorf, one of my favorite Krautrock bands, and I started thinking about bands that write songs referencing their band name in the lyrics and/or the titles of the songs. (In the song “Dusseldorf,” the word “Dusseldorf” is repeated probably a hundred times.) Off the top of my head, I can think of a couple of other bands that have done this:
The Monkees, “Hey hey we’re the Monkees”
Public Image Limited, “Public Image.”
The Fall, “Neighborhood of Infinity,” “Crap Rap 2,” I’m sure others will come to me.
Who else has done this? (I think we should leave out rap, because rappers often mention themselves.)
In before the ..
I dunno
xD
What’s the dress code? XD We have to make sure it’s feminist, but not TOOOO feminist or we’d all be in giant cardboard boxes XD OR naked
You and your slutty cardboard box, Ami!
Yeah, rap definitely tends to be the most self-referential, but Lady Gaga CANNOT write a song without name checking herself, it seems.
The Mekons wrote a song, Sympathy for the Mekons, that does that. Also, they are often self-referential in the album titles:
“The Mekons….Rock n Roll”
“The Curse Of The Mekons”
“The Mekons Retreat From Memphis”
As I am sure Johnny P will testify, I am a tiresome Mekon fan, and mention them constantly and annoyingly. This will be your only warning.
What’s the dress code?
Just make sure you don’t dress to attract men’s attention.
Also, spit.
In addition, a Mekons oddities disc, Where Were You, included a piece called Crap Rap. Curious whether the Fall was the influencer or the influencee,
With all the spitting, we’re gonna have to dress like the front row at a Gallagher show.
Those songs are pretty common, to the point that one was playing on my iTunes as I was reading this post. (“Nth Degree” by Morningwood… Don’t judge me!)
Blue Oyster Cult, The Subhuman.
Big Audio Dynamite, B.A.D.
Big Country, In a Big Country
Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath
Al Stewart: You should have listened to Al.
Mamas and the Papas, Creque Alley
Bad Company: Bad Company
In a strange way… the opening track to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
(and In a Big Country… Killer song. Bagpipes on the Electric Guitar).
Hey, everybody, no gobbing on the band members.
Also, does anyone else feel kinda bad about making fun of MRAL? I mean, NWOaf and EWME are just funny conspiracy theorists, but MRAL has actual problems (evne if they aren’t the problems he thinks he has).
MRAL? No, not really. He’s had plenty of opportunities to reevaluate his preconceptions and I see little evidence that he’s done so.
No, I don’t. He is truly odious.
Justin Timberlake says “Madonna” in their collaboration “4 Minutes”…not sure if that counts. hellkell mentioned Lady Gaga–her most recent video “Judas” has generated some really terrific commentary on Feministe and Gaga Journal (which got a shout out from Zizek! ZOMG!). It’s at http://gagajournal.blogspot.com (because I’m a technophobe and don’t know how to do that groovy highlighted link thing y’all do). GJ did a 4-part series discussing the various dualities in the video and one of the segments (#2?) talked about how the choreography during the “Judas…Gaga” lyrics makes the scene both a verbal and gestural emphasis on combining dualities. So, “what’s in a name” is apparently the essence of Lady Gaga’s being. Mwahahahahahah!
Hey, it highlighted the link automatically! Sweet!
Hey, everybody, no gobbing on the band members.
tell it to Sid.
Though, I should clarify: I don’t condone bullying. I dislike the tendency toward dogpiling unpopular commenters that I’ve noticed in the feminist blogosphere. But I reserve the right to be a little pissed that someone thinks I’m “spitting on them” because I fail to react to them in the manner they have deemed is appropriate.
Also, does anyone else feel kinda bad about making fun of MRAL?
Absolutely not. Mockery is the only thing trolls fear.
femalespectator, if you are using Firefox, there’s a nifty plug in called BBCode Xtra that gives you right click access to all the most typical HTML codes. italics, quotes, the groovy linky thing. A quick install, a little practice, and you’re a nerd!
We should have Friday Night Fights where we have some trolls and some nontrolls and we pair them up in arguing matches and we hand out title belts to who wins xD
Ami, that seems more like the daily posts.
Maybe at some points in the past, but not after the groping thread and the post where he said he’d hit people if he thought he could get away with it. Not at all.
Wang Chung. “Everybody Have Fun Tonight.”
Mr. Al is either a pretty decent troll or a truly disgusting person. Possibly both. I don’t feel bad about anything I’ve said to or about him.
Zombie, I rather think talking to the dead is your department.
Ew, the groping thread is really icky. I was too busy to read that one before.
ozy, I feel bad for making fun of him. So I try not to do it.
