  1. (I feel bad leaving the first comment here because it de-rails the carry-over from the last conversation, but here is my first official Hi There! I live in Londinium with four furrinati overlords who think it is ok to vomit on my things and sit in my pasta occasionally. They don’t actually belong to me, but that’s a story for another time…)

  2. I’ve been working through some rough stuff mentally lately, so I’m thrilled to have some good news! Some of my relapse prevention pocket zines are going to be used at a mental clinic here in Ohio! :D They’ve bought limited print rights for both, so that means money for me (yay) and that my work will be going directly to the folks who need it most. (YAY!)

    So I’m just really happy.

  3. @LBT That’s awesome! Both for the money and for the using art to help.

Is doing a hi there post expected? Should I have done one already?

  4. Introductory posts are not required, but they’re okay. It was nice to see you over on the other post, and introducing yourself by joining in on discussions without introduction is perfectly legit, pendraegon!

Also, nice to meet you, Saphy!

Did either of you get your Welcome Package yet?

    @LBT

THAT IS AWESOME! Money and helping out at the same time is a double bonus. I’m smiling huge over here for you! :)

Also, excited interweb hugs, if you like them!

  5. @LBT–

Yay! That is great. I remember you mentioning something about that threads ago and never followed up. Glad to hear that was positive!

Also, a note on me sucking at following up on threads–

I’m majorly ADHD and if I miss something you want to ask me/need me for on an older thread, feel free to find me in a more current thread and drag me back. It’s not that I don’t want to respond, it’s just that my brains moves at approximately 838494 miles an hour and I forget things.

Just @WatermelonSugar me and drag me back.

  6. Congratulations, LBT!

Welcome to pendraegon and saphy :)

  7. Oh good that makes me feel better, I always about starting posting somewhere new and making a poor first impression cause I violated local customs and etiquette.

And the welcome package was lovely, though I may have to exchange the kitty. My guinea pigs are part of the Bilderpiggie Group and they’ve always clashed with the Furrinati. :)

  8. Welcome to the new (newish?) folks!

    Congrats LBT!

    [Content note: violence]

WTF with that Malaysian airplane being shot down. Those poor people. Their poor families.

  9. Ok. This is kind of personal and kind of on topic for this blog. I don’t post anywhere else on the Internet, so I am turning to you folks.

There is another AVFM-sponsored grumpathon coming up in the fall at a university in Georgia, and it is supposed to be focusing on educating for men and boys. While that is something that is valid and needs to be discussed, I think we all know how MRA-affiliated conferences end up, which is to say badly and not actually addressing any topic other than bashing women.

There is nothing official on the university’s website, but there is a fund raiser on AVFM asking for an absurd amount of money to host Elam, GWW and others of that ilk.

On a personal level, I don’t want that kind of negative energy and hate anywhere close to where I live. On a good-human level, I am concerned for the university and the students there. I doubt the university has any idea of what AVFM is or the history of AVFM-affiliated acedemic ventures ending with protesters being doxxed, shamed and otherwise harassed.

What, if anything, can I do?

I was considering writing a letter to the university expressing my concern, but I am not sure it will be taken seriously, as I am not a current student there. Is there a peaceful way to make my voice heard?

  10. Welcome!

@LBT: congratulations. I love your art work, and income is always good.

@WatermelonSugar: is there is woman’s group at the university? All the universities I know in NZ (sample size = 7) have them. I would contact them in the first instance and give them a head’s up. I think some type of body for helping students is the best place to contact.

  11. @WatermelonSugar The letter writing is probably your best bet I’d think. Contacting local media with information about the generally vile nature of AVFM could be a strategy as well especially if you know anyone else who’d share your concerns. The more people who speak up and write in the better.

  12. I would say guinea pigs are part of the furrinati.
They have talents of their own

  13. Making the school aware of AVfM’s track record of violent and bigoted “satirical” statements seems like a good idea. And then suggest that they invite some of the legions of activists/educators who actually help men and boys, rather than these “satirists.”

  14. Thanks for the congrats, guys! It’s only $50 for me (they’re a tight strapped clinic, and so they’re getting my cheapest stuff) but still! $50 is $50! And hopefully it’ll be a start of a more longrunning relationship!

  15. @WWTH: it’s a Skinner box for guinea pigs. :) Do they let people brush them, because those little critters are so fluffy they look like they need combing to keep their coats from matting?

  16. Those two are painfully adorable, we just got a third one here and the older two are powerfully confused by how much energy he has.

  17. And now for something completely different, Bergere de France has their new catalogue out: http://www.bergeredefrance.com/customer/account/create?utm_source=homebuttons

They send these free, to anywhere in the world.

  18. Thanks for the advice so far, y’all.

My main concern is that MRM-affiliated conferences usually result in at least one specific protester being singled out and tormented for weeks, months or years. The idea of this continuing bothers me to no end.

My other concern is that AVFM has a history of dragging conference type things through the muck–see the Double Tree and all the journalists reporting on ICMI14.

AVFM has a track record of making academic ventures like this just…horrible. And this one is in my back yard.

It’s just a box-cutter wielding, fire alarm pulling crap-a-thon in the making. It’s beyond clear that this conference will not address education for men, but rather oppression of women.

Elam has already said he will be talking about the “rape hysteria crisis” or some garbage.

Beside that, the guy whose group is hosting it is…at the risk of “creep shaming,” really creepy. He is down with doxxing, has some really Roger-esque ideas about sexual politics and thinks street harassment is a compliment.

  19. I second everyone else who’s congratulated LBT! :-D

  20. CONGRATS, LBT!

Also, guys! Guys! Hey guys! Guess what’s on my shoulder right now?
    NEW KITTY! :D

    https://drive.google.com/?tab=mo&authuser=0#folders/0B323s_M8uRoMSDgyNkdBbTUydm8

You should all love my new overlord, because he is fluffy. At least, that’s what he has to say on the matter.

  21. Unimaginative

    Woohoo! Yay for LBT!

  22. Yay for LBT!

I don’t think I introduced myself either. I’m in Scotland and regretfully am without a furrinati overlord.

  23. @chimisaur, That is a cute fluffy ginger kitty. And your dog appears to have found a new overlord as well.

Welcome, gilshalos! Please pick up your welcome package at the link shared by contrapangloss above!

  24. @Watermelonsugar – wait, which university in GA? I’ve worked for two, and have personal ties with admin at others and would like to help alert the folks in charge. I haven’t heard of this conference, but depending on the university this does have the potential to be very unsafe for students. GA tech in particular is a powder keg when it comes to gender issues. I won’t let you know which one I’m at, so don’t worry about it, but if you can point out which university so I know which one to avoid if I can that would be super-helpful.

  25. but there is a fund raiser on AVFM asking for an absurd amount of money to host Elam, GWW and others of that ilk.

    Surprise, surprise.

  26. @chimisaur–

Here is a DoNotLink to the AVFM article.

    http://www.avoiceformen.com

  27. Thanks Watermelon.

To be fair that is not the most respected academic institution, so the odds of others taking it too seriously are down a bit, but you’re right about their potential to make the poor school’s reputation sink further via over-reactive smear campaign, and of course this could be a safety issue with students. The good news is, as a commuter college, there’s not going to be a ton of people stuck there with no other option but to tolerate the potential danger. Still, if the admin is not aware of what they’re inviting here, someone should give them a heads up.

  28. Massive congrats to LBT, thats super awesome!
pendraegon, I think the first time I commented here I was super nervous and confused and drunk and had been reading some really toxic TERF stuff…I think I made a bad impression, but everyone was nice(ish!) and I retreated and came back and apologised, and as far as I know, no grudges were held! So you’re doing better than me already!

    So, that fucking plane.
And a ground force invading Gaza.
    It’s a bit much guys. It’s a bit much.

  29. LOL:

Johnathan Taylor (keynote) is an expert in composition and argumentation, a walking statistics portal

No MRA I have seen can do statistics properly.

  30. Oh, hit post too quick. Nor are any MRAs masters art composition or argumentation. They don’t do logic, maths, or grammar.

  31. In news of Leum, I continue to toy around with gender and gender identity. I’m fairly sure at this point that I’m agender, not male, but I don’t really know how I feel about pronouns yet. Thankfully my real name is gender-neutral, so that’s not an issue. No real problem with using the men’s room, thankfully. Still trying to work out the difference between a massive amount of cis and male privilege meaning I don’t need to notice my gender and not actually having one, so there’s that. So far everyone I’ve told has been supportive, but it’s mostly been internet friends.

  32. Well I really appreciate the encouragement from everyone, been having a rough couple of months so it’s really heartening to be made feel so welcome.

And oy Gaza, though in happier news here stateside the Florida Keys just overturned their ssm ban.

  33. WatermelonSugar

There is nothing official on the university’s website, so I don’t know if it an official event or what. They sure are fundraising, though.

There’s mail red flags on most of those speakers, too. One has already prompted the AVFM rage-on treatment of protesters, one doxxed a teacher before ICMI14 and one is Elam, who is…well, Elam, and the toxic center of all the above listed crap.

I’ve done a bit of research about “acedmic” AVFM-affiliated events, and it is frightening. I’ve archived a lot of it, too, to send as support for my concern.

I think I will write the letter to the university. I need to see what student organizations might be helpful, too.

I don’t reddit, but would some place like AMR be a good place to look for support?

  34. Dunno. Reddit is bad for my mental health, so I avoid it like a fedora with a gun. I’m starting on the letter-writing as well though. :)

  35. Reddit is bad for my mental health, so I avoid it like a fedora with a gun.

    True story.

    Congrats, LBT!

  36. pally: for some reason your URL behaved weirdly for me (taking me to a page that showed how to enable cookies), but this one works:

    http://www.bergeredefrance.com/

On a different note, made a third book mockup. I think I am getting the hang of Coptic stitch binding, and it turns out a wrap-around spine label is both feasible and helpful if the book isn’t just a blank journal. You can see the various books here:

    https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.701667973212541.1073741828.100001080340239&type=1&l=2a18669fac

  37. Those are great photos. :)

Re the website, what I discovered is that if you’re using Firefox, the “don’t tell the website my tracking preferences” screws up the cookies for that website and it shows you that page instead. I had to specifically allow tracking before it would let me navigate around. I’m assuming they have some html issues as other ordering websites are fine with my normal Firefox setting.

  38. @pallygirl – oh good, I thought I was somehow messing up Firefox!

  39. @LBT – yay! May many more clinics make use of your pamphlets!

  40. I’m thinking of putting together a mix CD of potential manosphere anthems and wanted some input from the Mammothtariat.

So far I’m thinking some teen-angst attention seeking:
Linkin Park – Papercut (Don’t turn your back on me / I won’t be ignored!)

Some classic manipulative Nice Guy(TM) bullshit:
    Cee-Lo Green – Fuck You
Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know

And some perpetuation of negative myths about women:
    Kanye West – Gold Digger

    Any more suggestions? :)

  41. Mammothariat

    I LOVE IT

  42. Song suggestions:

Foreigner – Cold As Ice (about gold diggers)
Black Sabbath – Walk Away (about spermjackers)
Electric Light Orchestra – Don’t Bring Me Down (about man distressed by his wife having agency)

  43. Would that godawful Robin Thicke song from last summer be too obvious? *shudder*

  44. Plane… Gaza… I just can’t deal. (And I’m very aware that I don’t need to, but people in Gaza don’t have the luxury of not dealing.)

So here’s a very fluffy bull. Cutest thing I’ve seen today. It’s a special breed, but they also make it look super-floofy by cleaning, conditioning, and BLOW-DRYING it daily. Apparently the cows love it.

  45. I got a Mohawk today.

    It looks super.

  46. Yeah, chimisaur, I’m not even going there. Too obvious, and absolutely no redeeming value as a song in and of itself.

    I realised I haven’t covered the creepy harrassment/doxxing/stalker angle!
The Police – Every Breath You Take (also obvious, but definitely the classic for doxxers/stalkers)
Sarah McLachlan – Possession (which I thought was an intense, yet passionately romantic song when I heard it in late adolescence – until I found out it was a musical adaptation of a piece of creepy stalker fanmail)

  47. WatermelonSugar

The Internet tells me there is something called “Artists Against Misandry” in my home town, and I assume they have some lovely MRA songs, but alas, it seems they never made it to youtube.

    …Artists Against Misandry. Thanks, Nashville!

  48. This is sad because it’s such a catchy, upbeat song, but Bust a Move by Young MC is perfect for the manosphere.

  49. cassandrakitty

Papercut should definitely be the theme song for a lot of our boomerang trolls.

  50. “White Blank Page” by Mumford and Sons has always struck me as a Nice Guy anthem.

  51. For Nice Guys I would throw Sugarcube by Yo La Tengo into the mix

  52. Re music: I have this book so can offer multiple suggestions: http://www.amazon.com/Touch-Me-Im-Sick-Creepiest/dp/1556527535

And yes, Every Breath You Take is in there, as an example of a stalker song. The author wonders why this song is so popular at weddings, and so do I. Do people not listen to lyrics?

    Examples from the book:
    Obsession – Animotion
Run for Your Life – The Beatles
    Stan – Eminem

  53. WatermelonSugar

    The Friend-Zone Anthem:

    “Creep,” Radiohead

  54. WatermelonSugar

    Also a Friend-Zone/Break-Up Boohoo song:

“It’s Cool, We Can Still Be Friends,” Bright Eyes.

On a personal note, I am super bummed that Conor Oberst has become the “false accusation” super hero of the MRA clan. All bullshit aside, his music played a large part in me not killing myself in high school. Oh how the mighty fall.

  55. That one’s in the book too, @WatermelonSugar.

  56. @Leum

If you don’t identify as male or masculine, then you don’t have male privilege, and you certainly don’t have any cis privilege, either. Not even if you are perceived as cis and/or male. In fact, since you’re an AMAB (assigned male at birth) trans person, you face transmisogyny – the same form of oppression I face for being a trans woman. You might not experience it just like transfeminine people like me, but it’s still there.

By the way, contrary to popular belief, you can be agender and use whatever pronouns you want for yourself. (In case that’s why you’re confused about pronouns, since I know it’s easy to get confused about that.)

(I’m writing this in a hurry so I’m sorry if any of my explanations sound weird to you.)

  57. On a personal note, I am super bummed that Conor Oberst has become the “false accusation” super hero of the MRA clan.

Especially since he’s been classy about the whole thing. He asked people not to harass and threaten her and has stressed that his case shouldn’t be used as an excuse to denigrate actual victims.

  58. @WatermelonSugar, My blog was basically set up as a counterpoint to Artistry Against Misandry, which you can find mocked in these very pages!

  59. @strivingally
    Avril Lavigne – Sk8ter Boy

  60. Manosphere songs:

“Under My Thumb” – Rolling Stones
    “Love Me Dead” – Ludo
“I Will Possess Your Heart” – Death Cab for Cutie
“Somebody That I Used to Know” – Gotye
    “Awkward” – San Cisco

  61. Aside: Death Cab for Cutie kind of pisses me off. They take their name from a funny song by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and then do all this mopey, maudlin shit.

  62. Holy cats, WatermelonSugar, you’re in the Nashville area? I have family up there, I’m usually up at least twice a year. I’m going to have to hit you up for recommendations for stuff to do next time I’m planning a visit. I love my cousins and aunts, but their idea of a fun time is church and shopping, neither of which do much for me.

  63. WatermelonSugar

    @WWTH–
Yeaaaah. I have been avoiding reading any MRA writing about it, but I feel safe in assuming they don’t respect Oberst’s wishes. Just guessing.

    @Cloudiah–
Sheesh. I am just freaked out that those jerks are founded in my city. Nashville as a whole is pretty liberal for a red state, and the fact that these people share my city makes me feel a little bit like vomiting.

  64. @Flying Mouse–

Yeah! Let me know what you are in to. The Frist is pretty awesome if you like art. The Belcourt is a great indie movie house if that is your thing. Edwin-Warner park is a beaaaautiful park if you like nature. The Downtown Library looks like Gringotts from Harry Potter and often hosts cool authors. Hillsboro Village is fun and arty and full of great coffee places and bookstores, if a little over-run with super cool kids.

I do mostly boring stuff, obviously.

  65. Sorry I’ve been gone for a while. I decided Im going to be a tattoo artist so I’ve been practicing art. I won’t get an apprenticeship for a few years though (I have to finish college and make sure I’m good enough at art).

  66. Strivingally, my suggestion is “Walk Like a Man” by the Four Seasons.

Watermelonsugar, that all sounds quite fun to me. There can be advantages to having a low stimulus threshold.

  67. Boring? Pshaw! That all sounds pretty great to me. Thanks!

It’s kind of embarrassing. I was born in Nashville, and I’ve been visited a lot since we left in the mid-80’s, but there’s so much of the city that I’ve never seen. I’d never even been to the Parthenon until a couple of years ago. Most of my visits are taken up by classic Southern U.S. family rituals – watching football, annoying my politically minded relatives with my token liberal opinions, and eating enough food to provision Darwin’s expedition to the Galapagos.

  68. @auggz: that sounds exciting and interesting. Is there an institute that does training, or is it all on-the-job?

  69. @pallygirl, it’s all apprenticeship. There are “institutes” but they’re pretty much frauds.
