The Regender Challenge
The other day Darksidecat introduced me to what I now consider to be the Greatest Webpage Ever (this week): Regender, a handy tool that will take any web page and, well, regender it, turning male pronouns and references into female and vice versa. It even works with names.
Following Darksidecat’s lead, I have started plugging the writings of some of my favorite manosphere misogynists into the magical regendering machine. The results are, well, instructive. And frequently hilarious. As DSC noted, Roissy and MarkyMark are perfect for this sort of treatment. As is, I discovered, MarkyMark’s longtime pal Christopher in Oregon. Here’s what happens when Christopher of Oregon becomes Christine of Oregon with the help of regender, and all the horrible shit he wrote about women becomes the horrible shit she wrote about men:

Woah. Critics of Man Boobz often say that feminists are “just as bad” as the guys I quote. Well, if they were, the posts on their blogs would look a lot like this regendered post. I ask all of you: have you ever seen something so grotesquely misandrist on any feminist web site? I thought not.
Here’s a challenge for all of you: See if you can come up with a regendered post that tops this one from “Christine in Oregon.” You can draw from old posts of mine, or go poking about in the manosphere yourself. Post your results in the thread below, along with a link to the regendered web page you got them from. I’ll highlight the best in a future post.

What if women do have more STDs?
(As opposed to the reality, which is that we get diagnosed more often because some STDs have more obvious symptoms in females than in males, and because we get OB/GYN checkups and most males don’t get their penises examined regularly.)
That’s not evil of us, that’s… kind of unfortunate for us. It’s a public health problem. It’s cause to educate women, screen them, and give them the tools to protect themselves. It’s cause to fund programs like Planned Parenthood, which provides a LOT of STD screening and treatment at low cost.
You don’t solve a health problem by calling people with the problem bad and dirty.
I don’t see what’s so bad about chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis, anyway; they’re all easily cured with antibiotics. Unless you’re a slut-shaming asshole, they really shouldn’t be an issue.

But as Holly said, this would be an indication of a national health problem, not of women being “dirty or filthy.” You do realize that both men and women have sex, right? If men have a wider range on the number of partners, it would make sense that women overall would carry more STDs, because of catching them from a smaller population of males. So… again I ask. Your point is?

Doing more research, it looks like Holly was right in doubting the numbers. More women are screened than men on a regular basis, so the numbers for chlamydia (the main disease that differs between gender) may be artificially high. So… Yeah.. your numbers still don’t work out the way you think they do.
AWS, it is a public health issue that requires education and we acknowledge that. So what use does claiming women are evil have to combat a public health issue? Are we now going to start claiming childen with chicken pox are poopoo heads?

So, funny thing: I set out to regender some feminist posts, just to prove that they wouldn’t sound hateful regendered, and…
I kinda got stuck, because most feminist writing (I didn’t dig deep, but the front pages of Feministe and Feministing and whatnot) really doesn’t contain that many “men are…” or “women are…” statements at all. It’s almost like these writers weren’t passing judgement one way or another on entire genders.
Most of the posts frankly looked the same regendered, because they were talking about various issues which were gender-related but weren’t as simple as “men this and women that.”
The stuff MRAs say about women (and transfolk, and gay people, because the MRM is not exactly Inclusion-R-Us) is hurtful, but I think the single worst lie the MRM tries to spread is “we’re like feminism, but for men!”
I know I have a terribly unhealthy lifestyle….I even brush my teeth prior to every meal and take periodic baths!

The enforcement is social; men just don’t go around topless in the US.
It bothers me because it’s unequal, but it also bothers me in its implications: that my body is inherently sexual, and a woman’s body isn’t. It feels like women are being viewed through the first-person lens of “it’s nice to feel the sun on my skin, and I don’t mean anything by it” and men are being viewed through the distinctly third-person lens of “it’s inappropriate for me, a heterosexual woman, to see his sexy parts.” It ignores the experiences of people who are turned on by female chests and somehow manage to contain themselves when they see one.
This is not a very nice alternate universe, but I think the sheer alternate-ness of it says something right there.
The problem with regendering my blog is that Regender isn’t programmed to change genitals, which is leading to a lot of “his vagina” and “her penis.” Also, wow, my blog talks about genitals a lot. I mean, I always joked that the Engine is the blog about my vagina, but seriously, there is a lot of vagina-blogging here.

Probably saying this for the millionth time to Aws won’t make a difference, but the CDC recommends that health providers test all sexually active women under 26 for chlamydia, and reports that higher testing rates for women are likely the cause of higher reported cases in women.
CDC apparently doesn’t make such recommendations for male patients.
So, most/many women are getting tested every year, and most men are getting tested never — I’m sorry … which sex is it that you’re saying needs to make an effort again?
